It seemed like a good idea on paper.

Dick’s been distant for a while, managing to avoid spending any time with him beyond missions and training with the Outsiders.

So Roy figured that he’d drop by Bludhaven, maybe he and Dick could kick criminal ass, just the two of them, then they’d head back to Dick’s for a few beers and some proper male bonding.

Except it’s immediately apparent that Dick doesn’t want him there.

He’s tense, withdrawn. The lenses of the mask are up, showing his eyes are narrowed like a pissy cat.

Roy’s determined it’s not going to be a wasted trip, though. He’s always been good at getting Dick to loosen up, he’s sure he can have Dick laughing and making bad puns within thirty minutes.

“C’mon, Shortpants, let’s -”

“Go home, Roy,” Dick interrupts firmly, and then he’s turning away like that’s the end of the discussion, like Roy is just that insignificant.

And the whole point of this visit, the whole idea that seemed so damn clever when Roy was snaking through freeway traffic, was to show Dick that there are people who care about him, who worry for him. So losing his temper is kind of the exact opposite of what the night’s about.

But that little brush-off, it was so Bruce, so Batman, and Roy’s furious so suddenly it makes it chest hurt.

He moves forward, grabbing Dick’s bicep, and it’s like time slows down so he can see every emotion fluttering across Dick’s face. Annoyance at being manhandled, frustration that Roy isn’t doing what he’s told, giving way to shock at whatever he sees in Roy’s eyes, then something softer and maybe a little wary and aching.

Dick doesn’t fight him, just makes a quiet noise when Roy slams him back against the wall.

He’s too rough when he covers Dick’s lips with his own, but Dick just opens up to him like there’s no other option. He’s always been like this - doesn’t matter if he’s angry at Roy, because once they’re kissing it’s all forgotten. Like Dick can’t breathe right without taking the air from somebody else’s mouth.

This wasn’t the sort of bonding Roy had in mind, but it’s difficult to hold on to that thought. Quality time and actually talking seems distant and unimportant with Dick pressed against him, hips already trying to push forward.

And maybe that’s the point, maybe Dick knows that about Roy, maybe it’s just another of his clever tricks to keep everyone who loves him at arm’s length.

The thought makes Roy bite at Dick’s bottom lip, hold it between his teeth until Dick whines for him.

He wants Dick’s secrets, his pain, his honesty. He wants the connection they had as teenagers, even if he knows better than anyone that those days are behind them.

But right now, he’ll settle for this, Dick’s hands in his hair, his tongue in Roy’s mouth.

It’s not enough. But it’s a start.
