Note: This is
snarky_kat's baby, I just stole it and ran when she wasn't looking. How long I can hide, I do not know, but seeing as how my being-evasive skills leave something to be desired, fully expect that she will be the poster of this joint collaboration tomorrow.
Option One It wasn't really the hostile blonde that disturbed him, although he certainly could've done without the critical once-over. But nevermind. Walter was used to that from girls like her.
It wasn't that the coffee he'd been handed quite possibly had salt in it, and that the thin man who'd served him was giggling madly in the corner while peeking at him over the top of a magazine. Walter could put on a brave face for this too.
But through a wall of glass, Daniel Meade had been watching him ever since he appeared through the doors to claim Betty, and the intent darkness of Meade's expression was kind of freaking him out.
Walter cleared his throat and tugged at Betty's sleeve. "We should really get going."
Without so much as sparing a glance in his direction, she shrugged him off and gestured to the phone in her hand. "Walter, no. Daniel wants me to finish arranging this meeting before I leave."
Fast a lightning rod and convenient as a not-so-convenient-thing, Daniel poked his head out of the office and said, too-sweetly, "Betty, why don't you make that phone call in here. It's kind of busy and loud out there and this meeting is very important." Walter opened his mouth to protest, but she was already standing, already walking through the door. He tried to follow and Daniel stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. "I'll stay out here and chat with your boyfriend. Come on, Walter," he said, all but pushing him back a step.
Walter gulped as Daniel led him back towards towards Betty's desk. The young editor-in-chief stuck his hands deep into his pockets and studied him for a moment in silence. Then, with a dip of his head, he said, "So, Walter. You and Betty."
Walter shrugged. "Me and Betty."
"Are done," Daniel pulled a hand from his pocket to wave as Betty turned their way. Her braces sparkled as she returned Daniel's smile. "You need to go. I don't ever want to see you near her again."
Walter blinked. "Wait, what?"
Daniel glanced at him, and the brightness of his expression faded. "I know that you dumped Betty for a chance to sleep with the local whore. While she may have accepted your apology, we here at Mode feel that this was a mistake. She can do better. We - and to be clear, by 'we' I mean, well, I - think it would be wise if you go away and never bother Betty again."
Walter blanched. "Does Betty know..."
"Does Betty know I'm going to personally select the man to kill you if you don't? Does she... know that I will specify exactly how dull the knife should be, how deep the wound should go, how many minutes I want you laying in agony, surrounded by a pool of your own blood while your life slowly slips away from you and all you have is to consider just how horribly you misjudged me?" Daniel patted his shoulder, cocked his head and smiled again. "Come on, Walter. We're both men." He paused. "Mostly."
"B-Betty!" Walter tried to raise his hand and Daniel shoved it shoved down.
"Since we're talking about it, the man goes by Cobra, the knife won't do any damage unless you really push -but wow, those jagged edges are gonna tear like teeth when it gets pulled out."
Walter stilled. "What are you going to tell Betty? She - she loves me."
"Loved you. In a didn't-know-better kind of way. Now, she's got us."
"And by 'us', I guess you mean you." There again, the grin.
"Buck up." Daniel brushed a piece of imaginary lint from his shoulder. "I'm sure you'll meet some average girl shopping at the local Save-A-Lot. And you'll both live a boring ever after. It's just... Betty's a bit above that now, you know?" As both men looked at Betty - still engrossed in her phone conversation - Daniel said, "Goodbye, Walter. My men are going to watch you until you get in your car and drive away. Don't look back."
With the aid of a push, Walter started moving.
He didn't look back.

Betty stepped out of the room and came to stand beside Daniel. She blinked. "What happened to Walter?"
Daniel was sitting on the corner of her desk, flipping through the latest copy of his magazine. He frowned at her question and looked around. "Gee, uh, I'm not really sure. He did mention something about... something." He gave a dismissive wave of his hand, before dropping the same hand on Betty's shoulder and leaning in, saying, "Listen, Betty, if your evening has opened up, I'm gonna be here pretty late tonight and I could really use your opinion on some ideas..."
