Well, I can't say that I liked all of the same music my mum did. I didn't keep all of her CDs, just the ones I connected with. And I'm not even sure what kind of music my dad likes, although perhaps my Disney music interest came from him seeing as he did own the soundtracks for The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book and Lady and the Tramp. I believe he bought me the Little Mermaid soundtrack when I wanted his copy when I moved into my own home. XD Awesomely, he got me a double CD set that included The Little Mermaid II soundtrack.
I don't really associate any music with my dad, though. I guess I just didn't listen to much with him. I can see how you would associate a genre of music with a person, though. I'm likely to associate both jazz and electronic music with Jeremy.
Oh, Dom, I really, REALLY love this entry! And now I've got this urge to go upstairs and find my Tapestry album!
With my mum it's particular Hollywood musicals/films, '40s Big Band music, and talk radio. She never took to "now" music at all (she thought the Beatles were all drug addicts, so she'd be damned if she listened to them). She adored Gene Kelly, for instance. Therefore, so I do :)
The talk radio thing...she never listened to music in the car for some odd reason. Now I find myself doing the same. Very strange...
I love every single song on that album. It's a good album! But, oh, does it ever make me sad now!
LOL. Your mum sounds amusing. But in an unintended way.
I don't really remember if Mum listened to the radio in the car. I remember she used to put it on in the kitchen as she'd get ready for work, though. I think she probably had it on in the car. It was always the same station, though. By the time I got into comedy I started listening to a different radio station, but that was because I wanted to listen to the comedians who hosted the breakfast show rather than the music... I did get into the music I heard on that station later, though. It wasn't top 40s pop music ;)
I don't really listen to the radio now. I put my iPod on when I'm driving, though I do listen to the radio when I'm driving Doyle to school, primarily because I know one of the breakfast show hosts. Thankfully most of the music they play is 80s stuff I actually like XD
LOL, she had such a disdain for hippies it wasn't funny. I never understood it. For some reason that period where the Beatles were into mysticism really irked her. Years later I remember we were someplace and "Imagine" was playing in the background and she went, "Oh, this is a wonderful song. Who sings it?" I said, "John Lennon." Her face went white and words failed her!
Tapestry was the very first "popular" album I bought with my allowance :) I still have it. Haven't listened to it in years, mainly because I no longer have a stereo system :(
I used to listen to Top 40 and classic rock in the car. I still do if I don't like what's being discussed on talk radio. But as for the talk -- I don't know, maybe it's because I don't listen/watch the news as much as I used to, so I need my fix?
That's just classic! LOL I had issues with Avril Lavigne when she came out with Sk8er Boi (because of the spelling ;)) but then her music grew on me so I was quite happy to admit a change of heart.
Aww, sad! I still have the CD player I asked my mum to buy me in high school for my birthday, but I listen to stuff on my computer more.
Saying my husband is a Beatles fanatic doesn't begin to cover it! I only became extremely familiar with their music after meeting him. He's played them a bazillion times over the years, along with other music... but for some reason it's never stuck to our kids. I'm sure they'll associate us with the songs, always, but our music just isn't theirs.
haha. One year for my husband's birthday I bittorrented every single Beatles album for him because he talked about loving their music but not actually having any of it. I love that Doyle is really into it, but I think the fact it was a video game and he likes video games is a huge part of his interest ;)
This is a really sweet piece, lady. It really chokes the emotion out of you. Despite my crustiness over the issue, I really do love hearing stories of what brings families together, what binds them... This is a wonderful entry. And Doyle certainly has some great taste in music already! Next you need to introduce him to the utterly amazing and bestest band ever... Pink Floyd! :-p
Aww, thanks, man! You know, I'm not sure if I've ever even heard any Pink Floyd. If I have, it'd be due to having heard it in a movie since I associate music with movies more than the artist who released it. As such, no Pink Floyd CDs. If you link me some YouTube videos, though, I shall watch them!
Hmm, well, I'm going to disappoint you... I can see why people would like the music, but it's not really "my" kind of music, you know? Good thing I'm not the one dating you :P

My dad was really into country music, and I associate virtually every country song with him. Heh.
