1. Alrighty so for this one I started off with an image from The Devil's Whore, the first episode. After cropping it and getting the placement right I set out to make it lighter and brighter. She is so happy in it and I wanted it to be reflected in the coloring.

So first to lighten this sucker up. You can do one of a few things, (duplicate the base & set to screen...etc) I decided to use a handy Curves layer. Since her face is brighter than the rest of the image it can be tricky, so see what you like! Here's what I got:
Curves:
RGB: I: 181 O: 237, I:67 O: 137
Red: I: 191 O: 209, I: 128 O: 146
Green: none
Blue: I: 219 O: 219

I got this:

Now the background is more visible but her face is a wee bit too bright so I lowered the Opacity ever so slightly to 80% and I liked it, bright but not shiny, you know? Besides, with the upcoming layers we'll add some color & depth to her face that'll make it look better.

This is what I got:

2. Now we're going to get some of that depth back in her face. Open up a Selective Color layer and play around to see what looks good. Keep in mind there is a lot of red in the image background so you can't do too much at once without it look unnatural. Here's what I did:
Red: -44, 4, 14, 2
Yellow: -12, 1, -2, 42
White: -24, -7, 3, 15
Neutrals: -6, -4, -2, 7

You'll have something like this:

We've got more color in her face and she's doing better in the color department, but depth/definition is lacking a bit for me.

3. With that in mind I'm going to do another Selective Color layer.
Red: 0, 0, 0, 31
White: 0, 0, 0, -33
Neutrals: 0, 0, 0, 5

What we've got:

Better, no? But it's a little too stark, you know? I want to make it a little softer so to speak.

4. To work on softening it up I want to add a bit more variation to the black areas so I added a New Layer and filled it with a dark charcoal. I chose, #2c2c2c, and set it to lighten. What I got was too much so I played with the opacity and decided I liked it on 60%.

We now can see a little more highlighting in hair which is what I wanted (and hair like that, but one thing at a time!). Now I want to make it more natural, obviously her hair is not gray, and the background is a little drab no?

5. I added another New Layer, and filled it with a dark yellow brown, I chose #1e1401 and set it to Exclusion. I liked what it did, but it was a bit much so I played with the Opacity and set it to 50%.

Better, right? Now I wanted to make it a bit more rich and crisp.

6. After playing with different options I decided to add a Color Balance layer. It's going to be very small, but I think it goes a lot.
Midtones: 4, -1, -1
Highlights: 8, 7, 14
Shadows: 0, -1, -5

Make sure you have Preserve Luminosity checked!
I got:

7. Almost done! I wanted to make the color a little more rich, and I have this thing about adding a black & white gradient layer on Softlight, so I did just that. I played with the Opacity & the Fill and finally landed on 40% Opacity and 50% fill.

8. Last bit is optional, but I added a Hue/Saturation Layer
Master (Saturation): 9

Fin!
