Chapter 4:
"The Ancient Guy"
.o.o.o.o.o.
"WAAAAAH! Your face!" Anari screamed when she noticed his face.
They were walking along the street as the sun set behind them.
"What?" He asked.
"It's bleeding! OH MY GOD! I can't imagine you dancing in Shonen Club with that wound!" She said in a terrified tone.
"It's your fault so treat it." He muttered accusingly.
She grimaced at him, "My fault? How come? I didn't punch you! Ahh, my house is near... Let's go there first so I can treat your wound." She suggested.
Ryutaro got embarrassed. It has been a long time since he last went into a girl's house... and to think the girl he was thinking about was his cousin. "Ah, I changed my mind. I'll just go home. I'll treat this myself." He diverted his vision away from her.
"NO!" She insisted. "Don't worry. My mother and father will come home on the evening and my both my siblings are university students so they won't be home until 7pm. No one will see you there so let's go now..."
"I said I can take care of this." He stubbornly said.
But if he has a hard head, she has the same and won't let him win. She grabbed his wrist and they walked faster. "I said I'll treat your wound, okay? Don't worry, my house will just be two blocks away. It won't take long."
In spite of the constant protest and whining, he found himself sitting on the couch of their living room. Their house wasn't really big or small. Just enough for them, he thought. His sight wandered around the room as he waited for her to get their medical kit.
"I'm sorry to make you wait." She exclaimed when she arrived bringing the kit.
Ryutaro stiffened when he saw her. He was not sure why his heart skipped a beat the time she sat next to him and prepared the things she needed to treat his wounds.
‘Yokunai…’ He thought.
She then started treating his wound on the left part of his face under his eyes. Their faces were so close to each other that he found it awkward to look at her. Her heart beat was faster than usual every time the skin on her hand touched his face. That couldn't be helped because she was his nurse for the moment.
Finally, she placed a square bandage on his wound and they were done. "Yay!" She exclaimed in victory. "Success!" She whispered to herself but he heard it.
He smiled, "Thanks..."
Her heart skipped a beat for the nth time that day. She looked away as her face turned red. "D-do itashimashite..." She replied sheepishly.
And silence reigned between them.
An awkward silence.
"Ahh, I'll go now!" Ryutaro swiftly stood up from the couch and got his bag. "Thank you very much!" He then bowed.
She placed the kit on the table and stood up as well, "I'll accompany you to the door."
The short journey towards the door seemed to be weirdly longer than they both expected. Each one found it hard to step away first. Each wanted to spend more time together... Each hearts was burning with something they couldn't bare to utter in words.
When Ryutaro reached the door he bowed again. "Ja..." He muttered and went away.
"See you next time Morimoto-kun..."
.o.o.o.o.o.
"RYUTARO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO YOUR FACE??!!!!"
He only face-palmed with his mother's reaction when she opened the door for him. "Anou... Okaa-san..."
"Wahh! Nii-chan, you got into a fight, didn't you?" Shintaro, who appeared out of nowhere, asked rhetorically.
‘You are really a great help Shin…’ He thought while glaring at his younger brother.
He sighed. He needed to prepare himself for his parents' sermon later during dinner.
.o.o.o.o.o.
Ryutaro smelled the blossoming Sakura Trees around their school. He was sitting on a bench beside Satoshi who was busy reading a handy encyclopedia. They were facing their school building.
Ryutaro sighed.
"I can't believe we are graduating in the next few hours..." Satoshi muttered before closing the encyclopedia and slipping it into his pants pocket.
Ryutaro remained silent though he shared the same sentiment with his friend.
"You'll tell her today, right?" Satoshi asked.
That earned him a dreadful glare.
"Hey, I am just asking. You don't need to be mad you know..."
"Stop asking if you don't want me to get mad..." He replied flatly.
"Fine, fine! But I'm telling you this is your last chance Ryuu... You may never see her after today so do it no matter what it takes. This is a quest for what they call the most wonderful feeling in the world... Don't you know that a study in the University of Michigan proved that being in love makes man's life longer?" Satoshi started babbling with eyes full of enthusiasm.
Ryutaro grunted in great annoyance before leaving his friend. "Urusai yo!~"
"Hey wait, where are you going?"
"Toilet...." He replied.
'Hmm, I'll give 10000 yen to the charity if he won't tell her today... I just have this feeling he will...' Satoshi mused as he watched Ryutaro walking away. 'I can't believe he would really fall for her! Now I learn another fact, that teasing really helps in developing feelings... I should post this on my educational blog tonight and ask Ryutaro and Mizuno-san to become the proofs. Haha!'
Ryutaro walked across the field towards their school building where the toilets were, not minding what Satoshi was thinking anymore when he saw her -- Anari Mizuno, walking along the hallway.
"Omedetou..." She greeted him with a slight bow.
"Omedetou to you too!" He greeted back.
She smiled to him.
After what happened to them, they somehow managed to have a deeper relationship towards each other. They didn't treat each other as a mere classmate anymore but someone more important. Others thought they were dating already but no one had a proof, nor did they deny or admit it. They were just on the MU stage, Mutual Understanding as what Satoshi called it.
When she was about to leave he called her, "Mizuno..."
"Hai?"
"Do you have any plans after the graduation ceremony?" He asked.
She thought about it for a while, "I have but it will still be this afternoon, why?"
"Ahh, can I talk to you for a while? On the rooftop?"
She looked puzzled, "Ah, okay. No problem."
He smiled, "Okay... Ja!" Then he walked away.
She followed him with her eyes, 'I wonder what is it this time...'
.o.o.o.o.o.
"I'm sorry for being late!!!" Anari apologized while still panting. She climbed up the rooftop in haste because she almost forgot about what Ryutaro said earlier this morning.
Ryutaro was by the railing, smiling in relief when he saw her. He thought she won't be coming.
She walked towards him, "I'm really sorry. The other girls took so long in bidding goodbyes. Have you been here for a long time already?"
"Ahh no, I just arrived few minutes before you!" He lied.
She smiled. "Sou... ahh, what is it anyway?"
Ryutaro fished something out of his pocket and gave her a white envelope.
She took and opened it. "Eh? Tickets??"
He looked away, "For our concert this April. I just want to give you front-seat tickets. There is three of it so you can give those to anyone you want to come."
She smiled. She was a big fan of Hey! Say! JUMP. "Really! This is the best graduation gift I have! Thank you very much Morimoto-kun!!!" She exclaimed in delight and she bowed to him. She was really happy with what he gave.
Suddenly, while she was holding the envelope, she felt something hard inside it. "Ehh?" She looked inside the envelope and saw a black rounded thing. "I think you put something not right in here..." She muttered and took the black thing only to realized that it was a "...button???"
She was puzzled and looked at Ryutaro. He was still looking away, like trying to hide something on his face. That was when her vision settled to his uniform. She noticed something odd about it. His second button was missing.
"C-chotto matte..." She uttered in confusion.
Suddenly, a realization hit her.
There is a custom in Japan that when a guy gives the second button of his uniform to a girl after their graduation, it means that he is saying he likes her by letting him take care of the button closest to his heart.
Anari dropped down her jaw, figuratively. She was speechless as her hands were shaking.
Ryutaro noticed it and got worried, "D-daijobo ka?"
"W-what is this for?" She asked him while showing the button to him.
"Isn't it obvious?" He asked in an irritated manner. His face was turning to red in embarrassment.
"Y-you are confessing to me? Is this what this button means?"
"If that's what you think!"
She wanted to cry. "BAKA!"
"Why am I baka now?" He retorted.
"I always thought you hate me! I always watch my actions when I am with you so that I may not annoy you! I always hope that someday, somehow you'll find me one of the important persons in your life but I never thought you'll confess today!!! You are so unbelievable Morimoto Ryutaro!!!" She exclaimed as tears were flowing down on her cheeks.
He couldn't help laughing at her, "Hahah! It wasn't my fault if that's how you think!" He said as his childish side showed.
"It is because you said I annoy you and that I am not your type!!!" She continued whining.
"I thought the same thing too... But it turned out that those were just first impressions..." He explained.
"First impressions? We've known each other for so long and those were just first impressions?" She was now mad.
"Well, I didn't know much about you back then... Anyway, I've said what I want to say... I guess this is the part where I should ask for your answer..." He said wryly like everything was just part of a scripted drama.
She then punched him lightly, "WAH! You're really unbelievable!" She commented.
"I know!" He replied.
"That wasn't a compliment, stupid!" She grunted then wiped off the tears on her face with the back of her palms, "So my answer is... "
He then faced her with anticipation.
"I hate this..." She said in a low voice.
'She hates me?' He was disappointed. 'Maybe I got too arrogant and thought she still likes me. That's fine Ryutaro, it's your first time confessing anyway...' He started cheering himself. Optimism... it somehow makes people dense.
"I hate how much I like you Morimoto Ryutaro!" Her tone changed.
He blinked twice. "Really?"
She then went near to him and whispered to his right ear, "Yeah..."
He smiled and enclosed her on his arms. She felt his warmth and was very glad.
Ryutaro never imagined himself being in such a cheesy situation but even though he was embarrassed to himself, he felt happy with her being so close to him.
'Who would have thought that he will like me back...? Maybe greeting him every morning really pays it off!' She thought as he rubbed his back. "Thanks Morimoto-kun..."
"Call me Ryutaro like you used to." He said.
Then they pulled away, "No, I'll call you Ham-chan!" She derived it from the animal 'hamster' which Ryutaro usually resembles.
He frowned, "That sounds like my breakfast!"
She laughed, "Haha!! Okay fine, I'll call you Ryuu-chan! And call me An-chan... deal?"
"Sure!"
"So then, I should keep this button and take care of it for the rest of my life!" She said while putting the button inside her pocket.
"Yeah you should!"
"You're like an ancient guy Ryuu-chan..." She muttered as she struggled putting the button on the deepest portion of her pocket, trying to placed it safely.
Ryutaro frowned again, "Ancient guy??? Do I look that... antique?" He was slightly offended.
She chuckled, "No! I mean, this kind of confession is really cheesy I think no one does this anymore... well, except for you!"
He looked disappointed, "Is it absurd? Satoshi did suggest it this way so it's his fault!"
She smiled at him, "But I like it."
"Haa?"
"It's really Morimoto Ryutaro-style and I like it! Haha!" She giggled.
He blushed, "Oh well... I can't help it if I am cool..."
"Maa~ I won't react to that anymore because I know it's true..."
"Stop flattering me, okay?!" He complained.
"Flattering...? That is a joke Ryuu-chan!" She revealed with a mischievous grin.
He smug before putting his right arm around her, "Yeah right An-chan... Let's go now! I bet my family is waiting on the parking area already..." He muttered as she let him led the way with his arm being her support.
"Okay... My mom's waiting for me on our house already. She went home ahead."
"We can accompany you home..."
"No you can't..." She chuckled, thinking he was joking.
"Yes I can. I'll let you meet my family today!"
That made her flinched and stepped away from him. "No you can't!" She exclaimed in an alarmed tone.
He laughed, "Haha! I won this time!"
"What?"
"I was just joking... I know you will be embarrassed!" He smiled.
She hit punched her lightly, "Baka-Ryuu!!!"
And they both laughed.
Ryutaro thought that he would never judge a person with just first impressions anymore because those people may turn out to be the best people he will have in his life. He had once again learned another lesson in life, together with never meddle with someone else's business if you don't want to be punched on the face and then earn an ear-piercing sermon from your mother because the wound may create scar on your 'pretty' face and the fans won’t like it...
"Urusai yo!" Ryutaro exclaimed to the fan fiction writer.
hey, WHAT?!
