Chapter 2:
Road Safety Seminar
-x-x-x-
"AYAKO!!!" She heard her name being called out.
The sun just risen up. It was Saturday and she didn't have any classes so her thoughts were wondering why on earth her sister was calling her that early. "What is it?" She yelled back, brows curling all the while.
Just then, a bunch of thundering loud knocks stormed her eardrum.
"What the heck..." She grumbled.
"Open this damn thing, you lazy-assed! Today is Saturday!!!" Her sister shouted.
She turned on the other side of her bed while pulling her blankets over her face. "Yeah! Today is Saturday, I don't have classes."
"Ahh, you forgot?"
"No, I'm not forgetting anything so go away already..." She muttered as her eyelids touched each other again.
"TODAY IS THE ROAD SAFETY SEMINAR!" Her sister screamed.
Her eyes quickly opened. "The what? Is it today?"
"Yeah, so wake up now or I'll throw your cats from the rooftop to the ground..."
THUG.
The door immediately opened with a loud banging sound.
She saw her sister smiled with her arms crossed.
"Don't you dare touch them." Ayako hissed.
"Got yah!~" She whispered in pleasure, the pleasure of making fun of her younger sister. "You know I'm too good to kill your cats." Then she walked away.
Ayako glared at her. That was one of her sister's ways to wake her up, threatening. "Too good?! Rather an evil sister!" She mouthed.
"Stop talking back and get yourself ready. We need to attend that God-knows-what seminar. Our parents donated a large sum of money to get that seminar going even with the small funds the government gave." She heard her saying before disappearing on the flight of stairs.
Her sister sounded serious so she refrained from rolling her eyes and just pouted before entering her room again.
She found herself sitting in the midst of her fellow citizens of Machida. It's a small town so people around tend to knew each other, aside from her who was branded as loner and even witch by those silly kids who rarely see her outside of their premises. They couldn't blame her. Her parents provided them everything that she needed and wanted and put it all inside their home. From foods, recreational things and pets. She had friends but they were all from school. Those were all she needed and she was more than contented.
Suddenly, the stage lights lit up and someone emerged from the back stage. "Ohayou Guzaimasu Everyone!!!" The Emcee, an old man with white hair and a fake moustache, greeted them. He was called Hiroku-kun by everyone and was the leader of the town for 5 years already. He was wearing a brown kimono.
"Ohayou Hiroku-kun!" The people greeted back, including her sister who was sitting beside her.
Ayako didn't bother greeting. 'He won't hear me anyway...' She thought.
She turned around to figure out what could she do to busy herself when an idea came up on her mind.
"Sumi nee-chan, can I borrow your cell phone?" She asked her sister.
"Why?" Her sister snapped without looking at her. She knew Ayako would only play with it instead of paying attention to the seminar.
She rolled her eyes, "Never mind."
"I'm very proud to tell you that we successfully lowered down the rate of road accidents related to drunk driving around our beloved town Machida and that's because of everyone's cooperation!" The Emcee continued and received a round of applause from the crowd in front of him.
Ayako nudged her sister on the elbow, "Look! Ryoko-san is here!" She said as she pointed someone from a group of people who had just arrived on the town ceremony hall where the event was being held.
"Thank God she came..." Sumika gasped as she caught a sight of her best friend.
Ryoko, on the other hand, saw them and waved before sitting on a vacant chair two rows behind them.
"Now, your phone!" Ayako demanded while putting her open palms in front of her sister's face. "I helped you finding Ryoko-san."
Sumika pursed her lips, "You didn't find her, you just saw her first."
"It's just the same." She said without moving her hand.
She smiled when her sister opened her bag and got her phone out. "Why don't you download games on your own phone?" She grumbled before giving Ayako what she wanted.
"I don't like playing games with my phone..." She said before started digging her thumbs on whatever game she was playing.
Sumika sighed and turned her attention back to the seminar.
Few moments passed. Ayako finally surpassed her current level on the game she was playing when she heard the crowd suddenly got noisier. "What's happening?"
"Hiroku-kun said that they invited a celebrity!" Her sister exclaimed.
Ayako's eyes widened in surprise, "For real? They can afford to invite a celebrity!!!"
"No, they cannot. He said it was a voluntary act since the celebrity lives just within Machida and wanted to participate with the town's events." Sumika explained.
"Ahh, yeah! I saw that one coming..." Her eyes went back to its original sizes.
"I wonder who this celebrity is..." She heard Sumika muttered.
"Maybe some veteran actor whose last TV exposure was five years ago. Hehe..." She guessed and chuckled but her sister didn't hear her anymore. The people sitting behind them were turning into howling wolves. She frowned.
"And now, here is Machida's Traffic Safety Chief of the Day... Nakajima Yuto-kun!!!" The Emcee announced.
The audience went wild. Even the old one started to scream as they heard the welcoming music played on the speakers and filled the ceremony hall. A batch of small kid scouts emerged in line on the stage wearing their cute green and orange uniforms.
"Who?" Ayako asked when she didn't properly hear what the Emcee said.
But no one bothered to answer her. She saw her sister getting all too much excited with the special guest. "Wow! That's really him!" Sumika said as she noticed someone who seemed to be out of place in the middle of the line of kid scouts.
Ayako looked at the guy who seemed like the father of all the kid scouts on the stage. He was wearing a black suit and a sash with the words, 'Machida Traffic Safety Chief?', she guessed.
"He's really tall!" She heard a lady commented behind her.
"And so handsome," Another exclaimed.
"YUTO!!!!" A bunch of girls on the other side of the hall shouted.
"Ha?" Ayako helplessly gasped. Her eyesight was bad so she could barely made the celebrity's face out of her imagination. She managed to got her eyeglasses from her sister's bag and put it on. When she saw the guy that made the whole crowd go wild, her jaw dropped... "HIM?!"
"Ohayou Guzaimasu!" Yuto greeted the audience through the microphone.
"Ohayou!!!!!" A bunch of girls screamed back in reply. It irritated him but he couldn't show it, instead he gave them his most sincere smile and made them giggle more. Sigh~
"Thank you very much for accepting our invitation to be here Nakajima-kun." Hiroku-kun expressed while bowing.
Yuto bowed lower than him to show respect, "It's fine Hiroku-kun! It's my pleasure to be here."
On the other hand, Ayako still couldn't grasp what was happening. 'So he is actually a celebrity! No wonder why he looks so cool and glittering... glittering?!' She thought. 'I never imagined meeting a celebrity through that way! I think I'm so lucky...'
Suddenly, an awkward feeling of worry filled her. 'Wait! Sumi nee-chan is here! She should not know about what happened last time, when Maya was stranded on that celebrity's canopy or else, I'll be doomed!' She became anxious.
"Oi, are you alright?" She heard her sister asked her in the midst of the noisy crowd.
She nodded. "I just thought of something..."
"Okay." Sumika said and turned her sight back to the stage as the celebrity started talking of how grateful he was to be a citizen of Machida.
'He should not see me so the topic won't be opened or maybe, he already forgot all about it! Celebrities are busy people anyway...' She thought to cheer herself up.
Just then, everyone clapped. She figured that the celebrity, who was the same guy she thought as her most handsome neighbor and Maya's savior, finished talking already. She clapped too, following the trend around the ceremony hall.
"Stop worrying, everything will be okay..." She uttered to herself.
"Arigatou guzaimasu Nakajima-kun!!!" Hiroku-kun said as Yuto disappeared to the backstage.
Ayako sighed. 'I hope Sumi nee-chan will never know about that incident!'
