I mean, that's obvious, right? Srs people are interested in Javert...or, at a stretch, JVJ. But gee, maybe Javert is just too obscure and I've probably never heard of him, what with me being so mainstream and all

Seriously, whomever a person likes/admires/worships/adores is that person's own business and nobody else's, and nobody has the right to say anything about the matter (unless of course said object of affection were a serial rapist or a dictator responsible for genocides... in which case others might have reason to raise eyebrows. But not more). Anybody who feels the necessity of imposing their wretched, snobby ideas upon said person/s should go wander in front of a fully armed battalion of enemy musketeers.
There are far worse objects of admiration than someone who holds liberty and the motherland dear. It simply means that you either have somebody whom you can relate to, or revere for his stand - there's nothing wrong with that.
Oh, it's me being hypersensitive again. After being reminded at *every opportunity* that this guy doesn't like Enjolras (um...yes...message received the first ten times, thank you...), he decides to use the example of Enjolras fans as being "obsessive", and seems to think that following it up with "no offense" negates any offense given. This is feeding into my sense of paranoia, particularly after getting smacked upside the head with the whole "Enjolras worship" comment.
I know I'm highly defensive about it, but the Les Miserables fandom - including but not limited to Enjolras - has been one of the few bright spots during a period when my whole life went to hell. Now, I can't expect anyone to know that without being told, but I can't help the sting when someone sneers.
The poster in question was also making fun of the character in the movie for liking Jean Valjean, so I don't think he thinks only Enjolras fans are vapid. He also mentioned how much he hated several songs in the musical and didn't like Eponine, and then when mmebahorel called him out on saying that Cam Mackintosh only hired Norm Lewis for the 25th anniversary because he was black, he turned around and said, it was just a joke, I'm sensitive about being called racist so don't call me a racist. At which point I should have said something about maybe if he doesn't want to be called out on saying something racist he should think over what he said and not do it again, but I didn't because I didn't feel like getting into it, and I should have, and I'm sorry about that.
Obviously, this guy has a thing about being too obsessed with parts of Les Miserables, which I dunno what he was expecting to find on a message board about Les Miserables.
I keep trying to remind myself that he is expressing himself with great fluency in a language not his own, but not everything is going to translate and that may be a reason for some of the "voice" issues. Still, the high-handed tone is really beginning to grate. I feel guilty myself about not addressing the "political correctness" thing as it's one of my bugbears - I'm extremely weary of the term being used to bludgeon anyone who expresses disagreement or points out a questionable matter if a question of race, religion, gender or sexuality is involved..."you're just being politically correct!" sets my hackles up in many instances. To assume that "political correctness" is the reason for a piece of casting one disliked and then to cry "don't call me racist!" when it was pointed out that this is probelmatical, just doesn't really help the tone of discussion.
So yeah - I'm having one of my "I should probably just put the internet down and back away" moments if I'm getting this upset about it.
I saw that post about Norm Lewis. Cammack is a tool and a half and is a terrible caster and I really, strongly (if not deeply) dislikes the way that he casts, but Norm Lewis is amazing, and got it because he is amazing.
After that he made a post in the "anti-dream cast" thread and he included Frances Ruffelle and Daphne Rubin-Vega in it. Needless to say, it made me even less kindly inclined to him, heh.
The poster in question is being a fucking asshole all over the comm - please ignore him. I'm trying to figure out ways to not quite be a bitch but knock something into him. Trying to argue while strenuously not arguing in order to prove I'm better than he is. Because it makes me feel better not to just let his argumentativeness stand.
I tried ignoring him last night. It didn't feel nearly as good as engaging. Which is the problem with trolls. At least I'm finding his assholishness more entertaining than the trolls on the news websites he can rather easily be compared to.
I'm relieved it's not just me...I tried being pleasant to him from the start but just got nothing back, and then there were little comments that tripped all my paranoia he-thinks-I'm-an-idiot triggers. Which I couldn't respond to, as my judgement on these matters is very impaired. I'm just kicking myself now for not responding to the PC comment, but I thought if I did it would look like piling on. I still feel like saying I saw it exactly as you did, and I've encountered the same problem in the UK and Australia, so it's not US-centric.
If you feel like engaging, I'm not going to wave you off an eminently deserved pile-on. But he isn't worth getting yourself worked up, because he has proved he's a douche in general and not singling you out.
Yep, starting to get irritated too. If this person were just aggressively opinionated that would be one thing, but to be that judgmental and that thin-skinned (and so aggressive with anyone who's less than completely courteous and deferential)... if anyone said to them half the things they say to other people they'd be protesting to high heavens.
