This coming Friday, my wife is hosting another Partylite party. However, she was considerate enough to ask me "what would make this fun for you ( Read more... )

Why my dear Miss Veil, how delightful to hear from you. You are so very busy with business and your cabal, I had all but given up hope that I should occupy some small corner of your mind. :)

So, have you done this party before or is it a new enterprise? I'd love to see photos, or at least hear how it goes. This Friday will be something of a prototype for me, I suppose. I won't have time to do the real "Scrooge Day" until next year. Thankfully, I have our Yule celebration to look forward to.

If I avoid TV...and radio...and the mall...and Main St...and the office, maybe I can tune out the Xmas barage.

Ah, the steampunk angle could be fun too. Really, there's a ton of potential here. Speaking of absinthe, where do you buy yours? I have had frineds in Europe help me out, but I've been tempted by some of the online dealers. I wonder about price though. If you have a brand you like, I'd be curious. I've only had French.

a formal wine-tasting affair

Hah! I am suddenly reminded of the scene from Repo Man where his friends show up in the club...
"Nice friends, Otto."
"Thanks. I made them myself."

If that's how your formal affairs end up, I'd hate to think how a total piss-up would go. ;) Maybe some sort of outdoor venue would be safer...

What a lovely idea. I must admit that the season brings to me more thoughts of the Lorax than Marley. Alternatively, could I join you, dressed in a santa-suit, carrying a red cauldron emblazoned with the notation,

"Alms for Myself"

At least it would be honest...

I could allow it in your case, old son. Alternately, you could come as "The Hanukkah Avenger!!!!" We could give you a big menorah-shaped flame-thrower.

Why do I picture a Riff-Raff type lazer gun (with 9 points instead of his 3), only with my costume having little Jewish stars all over it?

because you're weird. I dunno. I was thinking something more like a Dr. Strange-type outfit - big cloak with a cool collar. Star of David on the chest. But if you want to go Victorian, I'd say think steam-punk Snidely Whiplash or Blackstone the magician -- cloak, top hat, nice ascot with a Star of David Tack pin. Could have cool gloves with the stars on the backs. The menorah could be electric maybe - a fancy Tesla static generator weapon?

Scrooge Day sounds much better then most of the holiday parties I been to. If not for family obligation, I'd probably ignore the whole Christmas thing.

Good day Mr. Knauer! It seems my LJ audience is expanding like the upffed out belly of a department store santa. I trust you're well, sir. nice icon, btw. Perhaps we need to chat about Civil War things.

Well, you're welcome to come up this Friday for the "prototype". As I was saying to Miss Veil, a real Scrooge Day party probably won't happen until next year. I understand your feelings though. I adore my family and consider myself lucky to have a whacky bunch of malcontents for relatives - as opposed to most of my friends' families. But the holiday "bond-o-rama" drives me bonkers. I get two rounds of it - my family plus Jen's family and step family who are entirely mundane and like to have the TV tuned to a football game the whole time. Makes my blood boil, to say the least. My own family tries to have a jolly time, but some sort of stress always creeps in - usually along the lines of "it has to be perfect!!!!"

Ah well, more than you needed to know.

Good day to you too, or rather good evening at this point. Given time, I figure I'll find most of the folks that I know who are on LJ.

The icon is of Emperor Norton, first Emperor of the United States. Sadly his only connection to the Civil War was not taking side and being photographed in both uniforms. Oh, and he abolished Congress (but no one listened).

My gg-grandfather was a corporal in the Union Army (Company H, 21st Reg, Berks PA), but I don't really know much about his service (or the war sadly)

My family falls in the entirely mundane category (except for my sister), so we do the holiday thing with Amy's family and my Mom, followed by something similar with my Dad and his wife. I try and just grin and bear it, but sometimes are better then others.

Oh yes. I rememebr him. One of the all-time great whackos.

I have sketchy knowledge of the war myself, but I find it fairly interesting. I don't think I could ever be a real geek for it the way CW reenactors are. I had ancestors on both sides of the conflict.

I try and just grin and bear it, but sometimes are better then others.

Yeah, I hear ya. It comes down to "Giri" (Japanaese: honorable obligation) I just realized that with jen's mom moving to up-state NY, I may never have to have a holiday with the step-family again. *crossing fingers*

This Friday is just a casual shin-dig by comparison. If I do Scrooge Day, I'll do it up right next year.
