The stars stood vividly against the velvet darkness of the night, shining like tiny diamonds, dwarfed by the giant opal of the moon, casting silver rays of light against the inky blanket below.

Guy stared into the night, trying to gain a little of the tranquillity flaunted before him, searching for the peace that tirelessly evaded him.
He stood there, absorbing only the darkness, drawn to the beautiful light that was always just beyond his reach. He smiled sadly, recognising the twisted metaphor as a perfect self description.

Marian watched as his broad, leather clad shoulders rose in a sigh, barely audible over the gentle breath of wind skimming the sea.

Finally free of her chains, she now had the chance to put her plan into action. She silenced the small stab of fear, and the tiny prickles of regret, of guilt, steeling herself, gathering the last of her courage. She knew what she had to do.

“Sir Guy?” He turned slowly at the sound of her voice, as she softly called his name across the deck; hesitantly she walked forward coming to a halt before his bemused gaze.

“Marian?” he whispered “what are you doing?”

“I might ask the same of you” her attempt at humour was met with cold eyes, the memory of her cruel words and rejection still painfully fresh in his mind. She would have to tread carefully.

“I could not sleep until I had the chance to speak you” Guy stiffened as she reached out, laying a small hand upon his arm.

“Do we really have anything left to say?”

He shrugged off her arm, turning back toward the sea. He was tired of playing games.

Marian grabbed his gloved hand, pulling him back toward her, trying to bridge the space between them, the distance echoed in his eyes. “Guy, please.”

“Is there no hope for us? I know I have been cruel, and that I have hurt you, and I am sorry for that, please look at me.”

He raised his head, penetrating eyes cold and hard as stone, “we have been here far too many times before Marian” he hissed “I am tired of being made to look your fool, and I will not put myself in that position again.”

The words were laced with bitter resentment and anger, the pain in his voice was etched in the harsh stance of his muscles, his entire body on the defensive; Marian realised she had hurt him far too many times to be easily forgiven.

Again he tried to turn away, to further distance himself from her, to protect his fragile heart from the inevitable pain he knew she always caused him.

Tightening her grip on his hand she urged herself on, “Guy, please, give me the chance to make amends, I never wanted to hurt you, please, let me explain”

His face hardened at her words, “and why should I trust you?” he spat, “why should I listen to your lies? All you have ever done is deceive me.”

Marian remembered the look on his face when she furiously declared her true feelings, the utter heartbreak and agony that resonated from his disbelieving eyes, oh so similar to the one he was now so determinedly trying to conceal.

Once more guilt prickled at her conscience, attempting to steal her resolve; trying to penetrate the shield she wore to guard herself from such traitorous emotions. She could not afford to falter; she needed to be strong, for Robin.

“I am sorry for the wrongs I have done you, I never meant what I said, but it was the only thing I could think of to slow you down, to protect the King, I know deep down you are a good man Guy, I could not stand by and watch you kill the king, not after everything that has happened.”

Her big blue eyes were earnest, thawing the icy retort upon his tongue, but there was still one question he had to ask, one thing above all others, he needed to know.

“And Hood?”

Marian swallowed, she would not betray her emotions. “He meant nothing to me” the lie fell easily from her lips, but she would not let him see how much the words cut her heart, she buried the pain, forcing it deep inside her, she could not let it interfere with her plan.

“Do you honestly expect me to believe that? How can I believe anything you say? After all the times the Nightwatchman and Hood fought side by side? After everything he knew about the Black Knights? Tell me the truth Marian”

“I never betrayed you to him; I only ever fought with him to help further a common cause, because we were both loyal to King Richard. My father pledged our family’s allegiance to him when I was a girl, and was always fierce in upholding that pledge.

My first loyalty has always been to my king and my father, how could I go against them? How could I betray my father by marrying a Black Knight?

Everything has always been clouded by politics, ideals and loyalty to others, loyalties and ideals that have done nothing but cause us both endless frustration and unhappiness.

But the king and my father are gone. All the ties I had are severed, and I can finally believe what I want to believe, be with the man I want to be with.”

The coldness began to dissipate from behind his eyes, the defences lowered, becoming less cautious as he heard the firm conviction in her voice, slipping away into nothingness.

His heart began to beat faster, once again trying to battle against the callous voice in his mind, as it screamed out against yet another calculated manipulation.

His heart would not listen! That voice caused continual pain and confusion, she had declared her feelings, and surely that was enough? Everything that she had ever hurt him with was explainable! Everything could be laid at the feet of Sir Edward and his sensibilities! He would not listen to the voice, it was the voice that hurt him, caused him to doubt, not Marian.
In a darkly shadowed corner of the deck, Vaizey watched them kiss with sardonic amusement; she had taken the bait, his plan was working perfectly.
