mini_nanowrimo Jensen and Jared have been best friends since they were little when they used to be neighbors. Jared was the new kid on the block and since there weren’t that many kids, Jensen went over to see if he wanted to go play.
Jared and Jensen got along instantly, and the bond cemented when some kids were picking on Jared in the playground. Jared was chubby and short at the tender age of six, and Jensen being a whole year older, and a bit taller, stood up to the bullies. He was shorter than the kids, but he had this no nonsense attitude about him that made the other ones run off.
Jared maybe had some hero worship for the guy from then on. Both of them were inseparable until middle school where teenagers are teenagers. They didn’t talk for while, figuring out who they were and which clique they belonged to. Jensen, even though he was the one that started it, couldn’t stand the distance between them and begged for Jared to forgive him.
Jared wasn’t the type to hold grudges and everything was instantly forgiven. While they each had other friends, they were each other’s best friends.
There were a lot of benefits to having a best friend that you grew up with, Jensen though.
He knew all of Jensen’s secrets from the time they were children - from a fear of spiders to having a crush on the very male math teacher to weird thoughts of the future and anything and everything in between.
It was kind of like Jared and Jensen had their own language based on half sentences, random words, and nonverbal communication. A quirk of an eyebrow got the response of a tongue being stuck out and both of them knew exactly what it meant.
So yeah, there were quite a few benefits to having such a close best friend.
Jensen, though, he realized around senior year of high school that he wanted something more than just being best friends. He realized he was pretty much in love with Jared, and although he knew Jared got the odd crush on a guy, it never moved to anything serious.
He didn’t want to just be an experiment for the guy; he wanted more. A lot more.
Jensen didn’t tell Jared, but he knew Jared could tell something was up from the probing questions and worried glances. Jensen didn’t know how to explain to Jared that he was in love with the guy, not wanting their friendship to be ruined because of his confession.
It took alcohol stolen from Jared’s dad’s liquor cabinet, a late night when both sets of parents weren’t home, for the entire story to come tumbling out of Jensen’s drunken lips. He told Jared everything, moving into maudlin territory, unaware of Jared’s wide gaze and calculating eyes.
He passed out mere minutes after dumping this life-changing secret Jensen had been carrying. The one secret he hadn’t told Jared and kept hidden for months.
Jensen woke up with the hangover from hell and Jared passed out next to him, Jared’s long arm draped over Jensen’s chest. Jensen clenched his eyes shut, reveling in the warmth for as long as he could before reality hit him.
Jared mumbled something and shifted a little and Jensen gingerly opened his eyes, feeling the realization of last night crushing down on him. Jensen had spilled everything and Jared hadn’t stormed off. Granted, Jensen hadn’t given him much of a chance to do so by falling asleep, but Jared hadn’t left while Jensen was unconscious.
The first thing Jensen’s eyes see are Jared’s own, peering back at him carefully. Jensen can’t quite tell what Jared is thinking, which is a first.
Before he could open his mouth to apologize, Jared leaned in and kissed him. It wasn’t the best kiss, morning breath from a night of drinking and all, but it was still perfect.
“Jared?” Jensen asked once Jared had pulled away, trying not to get his hopes up.
“You’re an idiot,” Jared said to him.
“What?” He asked, affronted.
“How could you not know I felt the same? That I haven’t had a girlfriend or a crush on someone in a really long time? That I spend every single moment with you?”
“Because we always spend all our time together?” Jensen said slowly, because it was true.
Jared rolled his eyes.
“More time than normal then dumbass.”
“Is this relationship going to be built solely on insults?” Jensen asked, then promptly bit his lip, thinking he had gone too far.
“When has it not been?” is Jared’s reply before he leans back in for another kiss. Jensen thinks of how true that is and is more receptive to this one, kissing back.
They brush and then make out for hours, giggling and talking in between kissing sessions.
Having Jared as Jensen’s boyfriend had its benefits too. He could still tell Jared all his secrets, and they still had their own language, but it was different. Now they could just lock eyes and smile instantly, mushy thoughts going through both their minds. They could sit for hours, talking about nothing, but just content to be in each other’s company, hands in more intimate areas than before. And they kissed whenever the urge hit them, a huge benefit.
