Jensen loved his kindergarten class, he really did. He had a really fun teacher who let them play all the time, he could write his own name, he colored and drew a lot, and he learned to read, too. The kids in the class were okay, too, even if he didn’t have a best friend like some of the others.

Then a few days before it’s Christmas vacation, a new boy came to his class. Mr. Hodge introduced the boy as Jared Pada-something and Jensen was enraptured by the boy’s shy grin, messy hair, and the little dents in his cheeks. Mr. Hodge pointed Jared to where Jensen was sitting, because Jensen was the only one in the class with an empty table next to him.

Jensen waved ‘hi’ and Jared blushed a little; Jensen really liked seeing that. He smiled shyly again and waved back and Jensen knew they'd be best friends.

And they were, not even two days later, both boys were inseparable - constantly attached at the hip. Jensen found out Jared only lived two blocks away so they'd always be at each other’s houses. A week after Jensen had met Jared, he knew he and Jared would be together forever.

"I love you, Jared," Jensen said a week after he met Jared, because he knew people said that to people they really cared about and Jensen cared about Jared a lot. They had no school, and still made sure they saw each other every single day.

Jared just laughed though, that his cheeks flushing the pink dull again, Jensen seemed to make Jared do that all the time. He really liked saying the things that would make Jared's cheek color. Jared usually shot something right back at him and it'd be Jensen's turn to blush. They were perfect for each other, Jensen knew that when he was six years old.

Jensen watched Jared laugh, at the color of his cheeks, and made a promise to himself and Jared.
"I can wait, Jared, as long as it takes," Jensen said seriously and Jared stopped laughing, biting his lip instead. Jensen nodded and reached out to poke Jared.

"Tag, you're it," he shouted and ran away, laughing hugely. Jared opened his mouth before his eyes narrowed a little. Jared was very serious about tag. He laughed, too, though, and ran after Jensen, aiming to catch him.

Every year after that, on the same exact day, Jensen would tell Jared he loved him. Jared was always somehow caught by surprise, and he'd always blush prettily. Jensen knew that Jared knew the phrase was coming, but he still seemed taken aback, like he didn’t expect Jensen to actually say it. It took nine years for Jensen to realize why he found Jared blushing really attractive, and a year after that to realize how utterly true it was. They remained best friends, no way they couldn't, and nothing really changed. Jared was bisexual, both of them realizing they were watching Ocean's Eleven for more than just the plot, but he never seemed to like Jensen in that way.

Jensen didn't push it the rest of the year, but on that one fateful day just like Kindergarten, he'd reveal his true feelings, knowing Jared would laugh it off. He never stopped trying though. At twenty-one, both of them about to graduate college in May, a mere 5 months later, Jensen finally decided this would be the last year he'd say it. It was hurting too much to not get an answer in return, because he knew that Jared didn’t feel the same for him.

All day, Jensen psyched himself up to say the final ‘I love you’ and all he felt were nerves. He didn’t even know why he was feeling nervous, maybe because this meant he was giving up and Jensen wasn’t the type to give up.

Jared kept glancing at him too, like he was anticipating when Jensen would say it.

They were hanging out at Jensen’s place, and they were both on break from college, lounging around on the sofa and playing some video games. There was a lot of trash talk going on and suddenly Jared stopped.

Jensen looked over, trying to figure out what happened.

“Jared?” Jensen questioned, a little worried by the silence.

“Jensen, I love you,” Jared said, all serious and with a hopeful smile. Jensen felt like he couldn’t breathe, so scared that Jared was just saying it. But the way his eyes seemed to be lit up a little and the way he was biting his bottom lip, like he didn’t know what Jensen would say, cemented the thought that Jared was being honest.

“Jared?” He breathed again, not daring to hope.

Jared nodded fervently and Jensen couldn’t hold back anymore.

He dropped the remote controller from his hands and turned so he was facing Jared completely, leaning in quickly to taste the mouth that had been haunting his dreams for year.

“Never thought you’d say it, had almost given up on you Jay, couldn’t take the hurt anymore,” Jensen said nonsensically between kisses, getting out his fears on every breath not pressed against Jared’s mouth.

“Hey, it’s okay, you got me,” Jared soothed and Jensen just kissed him deeper, clutching at Jared’s shirt like he was scared Jared was going to disappear. Jared ran huge hands along his back, trying to calm him down and Jensen felt completely safe in his arms.

He knew in Kindergarten it was love at first sight, even if he was too little to know what love was.
