Colleen Plus Japan = Oscars Won and Unicorns Stolen

Mar 26, 2009 22:13

The twitter monster got me. Attacked and sucked me in. I have made it out alive all with all my pieces. Well...I DID lose my left foot, but honestly that was the uglier one. (I'm sure you all noticed.) I can't believe I went almost two weeks without reading any LJ posts but hit refresh, refresh, refresh on twitter. I guess it's because I can sneak ( Read more... )

The single word I used the most was sumimasen, which is both excuse me for being in your way and excuse me can you help me? Though it would've been useful to also learn I'm sorry, I'm out of Japanese., it's actually really easy to avoid having to use much of it since mass transit has signs in English and a lot of cashiers speak some English. But then, I do, hmm, let's say exhaustive research before I go, partially to be as self-sufficient as possible. (Exhibit A: See email.)

How did I forget to put "I'm sorry" on there?! That's pretty much the only phrase I learned anytime I ever went to another place with another language. I'm a klutz so I get to use it a lot! Thanks! Also "I'm out of Japanese" makes me laugh. Maybe that should be the first thing to say to anyone I encounter...maybe that's the only thing I should learn!

Got Exhibit A and am totally excited to read through it! So awesome! Thanks so much!

sumimasen also means "i'm thoroughly confused, and quite drunk, so it's best if you just ignored me while I stumble about making a fool of myself"

It's a great word.

i hope you get a chance to visit our bar...

Wow. Sumimasen is going to come in handy more than I originally thought! Does it also happen to mean "I'm sorry I stole this $4 million dollar robot. I must have been drunk and confused and wearing a large coat."

Going to your bar is one of my "musts" during the trip. How was your month stay there?!

Give Ed a big hug and kiss from Jen and I. Both of who you've never met. haha I love Stephanie art. Congrats. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with. Can't think of any other phrases you may need to learn. hmmm I bought Jen a learning conversational Greek book in case we go to Greece next year. There was a chapter on sex that was quite funny. She has still been trying to figure a way to use some of the phrases at dinner with my parents. haha Have a safe trip.
peace,
Herc

I plan to give him a hug/kiss for every person who lives in the entire U.S. of A. but I will definitely give one specifically from the two of you!

Hmmm...maybe I should give up trying to learn any Japanese and just learn Greek instead. Then when I don't understand anything (which I'm sure will be the case no matter how hard I try) I'll have a good excuse. And by the time I figure out how to get to Greece (which I'd love to go to!) I'll be a pro! That book sounds kinda amazing!

haha I don't doubt that after 5 months apart. ;-p

You and Ed should both learn Greek. Then we can all plan a trip to Greece. Getting the money to go is another thing. My family would love it. The more the merrier. Just get ready to eat...a lot. haha My brother-in-law had to constantly keep food on his plate just so they wouldn't give him more food. The book is f'n awesome. There is a chapter on conversation if you go out to a club. Everything from getting a drink to picking up a potential suitor. It is a riot. It kept Jen and I laughing for hours.
peace,
Herc

It's so awesome you have family there as an excuse for the trip. My family lives in very exciting places too. Like scenic New Jersey! And majestic Massachusetts! And lovely Long Island! Ooooh! Basically all the places that are hot on most people's "places they should visit before they die" lists.

They do that food thing in Italy too! I mastered the art opposite what I had to learn as a kid. Instead of making food I didn't want look like less was there, I was always determined to make it look like I still had a full plate!

i felt old yesterday because i said "i don't get twitter." um. i best school myself in the monsters of the age or bet left in the 2000s (i.e. secure my status as old at 26).

Twitter is so weird because I recently had a friend's teenage sister tell me "twitter was for old people" so maybe by not understanding it you are actually cooler than the scary hordes of people who are addicted to it. Actually I'm pretty damn sure you are ( ... )

I had a hard time getting the Pat Sajak Twitter thing with Colleen, I 'll admit it.

Whatever happened to post cards? Or Dial phones with the rotary thing? Or Edsels, that was a good car. ;)

Hey I still love post cards! You just don't get any from me cause I'm not sure the mailman would give them up if they accidentally read them...

I desperately want a rotary phone again. I miss that sound. If I ever have a landline again I might insist on one!

How cool! Have a terrific trip! My knowledge of Japanese pretty much begins and ends with "Domo arigato, Mister Roboto"

I'm probably the last holdout who refuses to do Twitter! Then again, I still haven't joined Facebook, either.

You should also learn to say "Please show me your amazing toys."

You need to bring your superhero mask and you and Ed can be masked Gaijin vigilantes.

I think it's a given I have to bring that mask. Some ridiculous videos are pretty much inevitable!

I am endlessly proud of the fact you've avoided facebook so well. I feel like I should brag about my friend Eric who can withstand insane peer pressure. As for twitter is truly dumb and I thnk the trend will die down soon enough. I'm always slightly embarrassed I find so much enjoyment in it! But man Pat Sajak is on there! I'm (internet) friends with Pat Sajak!

Supa big congrats on the work stuff! You're livin' the dream!

"Webcomics guru" has a nice ring to it, but how about "Webcomics sherpa", leading both amateur and pro alike through the snowy, mountainous regions of the interweb? You could even wear one of those pointy Yeti caps! Think about it!

So jealous of your trip to Japan, btw. Say hi to Godzilla for me!

How about I just go for Webcomics Yeti and I stop shaving my entire body every day. Uh...which I uh...don't do or anythi....Hey Look Another Yeti! *runs away*

See I'd love to say hi to godzilla for you but if I do mothra and that flying turtle may think I'm "with" him and I dont' know if I can risk those two joining up forces and attacking me. Sorry. I think I'll just have to walk by Godzilla and know in my heart I WANT to say hi for you, but that it's best me and Godzilla pretend we never went to summer camp together.

Hmmm...I'm not sure why I put quotes around "with" in that last paragraph. Is my subconscious trying to tell me something I don't remember?

Well, I didn't know you and Godzilla went back so far. I just wanted you to tell him I loved his work, but if it's going to reopen old wounds, I understand. However, if you're not going to speak to him just because of those two catty bitches, Mothra and Gamera, then I think you'd better reevaluate who your real giant monster friends are.
