Today I learned:

It is correct to write either canceled or cancelled. Much like advisor or adviser.

Who. Lets. This. HAPPEN?

The same people who decided that octopi is an okay plural form of octopus, even though it's not correct.

Octopodes. It comes from Greek, not Latin, hence the -odes ending as opposed to the assumed-correct -i ending. Thank you Br. Joe.

Well even though there are two options, AP style only permits one "l" in cancelled (though I obviously prefer two) and an "e" in advisor (though, once again, I prefer the other way).

I wish I knew how to quit you, AP style.

My vote goes to Oprah. She controls everything else, so I don't see how she can't own at least one word.

I'm old-school AP-style (thanks, crappy Columbia College!), so one l in canceled and an e in adviser is what I consider correct.

True as that may be, it's an inter-cultural discrepancy. This is a permitted inner-cultural discrepancy! Same country! Two spellings!

That's what I wonder about.

Besides, you all started out as prisoners, so we should win spelling squabbles by default.
