VAT tax and declaring goods

Anyone else a little worried about how to declare your goods and not have to pay import tax? I know as students we don't have to, but the paperwork leaves me extremely confused!

It is definitely confusing :( When I studied abroad in the UK the first time I was really worried about this- so much so that I went through the "red" customs channel at Gatwick. I told the officer that I was a student and wasn't sure if I needed to declare anything, especially my expensive laptop. He said, "Is the laptop going back with you to America?" and after I said yes he told me that I didn't have to worry about it. So basically my understanding is that for most personal goods, stuff you already own, you shouldn't have too many problems with customs. Of course, I just had a suitcase + duffel bag + backpack worth of stuff and wasn't shipping over my whole life- if I was, it might have been different.
