Ever since the wedding, Stephen had been, for lack of a better word, avoiding Asher. It was only partly because of The Incident, even though he hadn't gotten drunk and made out with a guy in about twenty years. But that was easy enough to explain away.

However, the thing that Stephen said when he left

"So. How long are you planning to keep this up exactly?" Asher asked around his cigarette from his perch atop one of the washing machines. He'd been thumbing rather disinterestedly through a copy of In Search of Dracula: The History of Dracula and Vampires that the bookshelf had given him.

Been there, done that, found the guy... And, boy, had he been pissed.

"You're about as stealthy as an ox."

Well, that sucked.

Stephen jumped, swore under his breath, and wondered what he had been doing wrong. Of course, it couldn't have been much, since he had managed to avoid Asher until now.

"I'm not sure, actually. Until this happened, I guess."

And that wasn't what Stephen meant to say at all. He blinked.

"... Until I was sitting on a washing machine, chain smoking with this specific book?" Asher asked sarcastically, exhaling a thick cloud of smoke as he arched an eyebrow. "Huh... Weird."

Stephen dared to take a couple steps towards Asher. See? He could be brave.

He planned on saying something sarcastic in response but somehow what came out was: "No, I just meant until I ran into you wherever." What the hell?
