So, there is this episode of The West Wing, that addresses (but does not resolve) CJ's father and his issues with Alzheimers. And though I have been watchning WW, again, for the last couple weeks, I kind of avoided this one. Really, the only things you can do are to be sure your parents know that you love them, if that's appropriate given your relationship, and to be there for your mom if she needs your help in any way. Beyond that, your feeling of helplessness and bewilderment is completely normal--frustratingly normal. It's a feeling with which I am well familiar. In the end, letting people know that you care and that you're available is important. Do the things that can make a difference if you can. Don't let the relationship end without your doing whatever you feel is most important. Leave nothing hanging or incomplete.

my boat ain't entirely dissimilar from yours. i came across http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/532/magic-words?act=2 a little while back, which provided me a little insight into how to make difficult conversations sometimes a little less difficult - might be of use to you?
