2015: Notable Books

For the past few years, I kept delaying posting my year end lists of favorite books because I hoped to write the books up (and also because I have complicated feelings about favorites, best ofs, and the influence of social bias in aesthetic standards, but that's a longer story). In the end, I never posted on them here at all. (Apparently I haven't ( Read more... )

I'm so glad you posted! Your recommendations over the years have led me to some of my favourite writers.

What are your thoughts on Carry On? I haven't read anything by Rowell because I'm a bit afraid of second-hand embarrassment due to my dislike for navel-gazing + personal past in the HP fandom. But perhaps I'm missing out on something that's interesting enough on its own?

The Fifth Season, Trade Me and an earlier Kelly Link collection were all in my top of the year lists this year, The Lie Tree was a honourable mention and I have yet to read Zen Cho's novel, but I've heard so many good things. (I went to Naomi Novik's signing in Poland and she was so enthusiastic about it!)

Try Rowell's "Eleanor and Park." It's a solid misfit-girl-meets-slightly-less-misfit-boy YA novel with no connection to the Simon Snow/pseudo-HP mythos that figures in "Fangirl" and, far more directly, "Carry On."

Thank you for your lists! Other people's reading lists fascinate me: almost as much as seeing what they have on their bookshelves!

And... Attic Term! How did I miss it? (I probably read Autumn Term, End of Term and one other in the late 70s, but missed that one. Maybe it never made it to my local library or into paperback in Puffin. Now I shall search it out. Thank you!)
