Homeland, Once Upon A Time, Grimm

Homeland 1x01-1x03: A CIA agent suspects that a rescued POW has become an Al Qaida sleeper agent. So totally not my kind of thing, partly because I expected it to be an exercise in jingoism porn and partly because I am not particularly interested by thrillers -- I don't mind them, I can love them, but they aren't an automatic plus for me the way ( Read more... )

Homeland has such amazing acting. I was expecting great things from Damin Lewis and Claire Danes, because DUH! But I'm been blown away by Firefly's Morena Baccarin in what I had assumed would be a throwaway role as the little wifey ( ... )

I know there are non-evil black people in DC, but I'm not sure how many of them are working for the CIA? Maybe I'm wrong, but my impression is that US espionage is pretty white. I would expect to see a lot of people of color in the military, though.

Yeah, I didn't find out about the 24 connection until after I'd seen the episodes. It doesn't make me less cautious.

Yes, I think we're supposed to be horrified by Carrie's invasion of Brody's privacy (I suppose that's why they've given us Max the Surveillance Dude's Cousin, just a bit of emphasis on the HAI THIS IS WRONG). I'm also hoping that in addition to Saul's abuse of the system, there will be a lot more about the Patriot Act and essentially carte blanche given to the cops.

I'm glad you mentioned Once Upon a Time. I've been avoiding Grimm since I heard about its treatment of women, and it's nice to have a fairy tale show I can go to instead!

Back after watching OUAT. SO HAPPY. Emma ILU! <3 The story is all about her and her arc at its heart. ((squees)) I loved that and how, aside from Emma, there's also Snow and the Evil Queen at the center of things, with male characters being important in relation to them, as The Pretty Sleeping Husband, The Cute Kid, and The (Possibly Deceived) Henchman. Two out of three of which need the female characters to rescue them! lol

I am a bit disturbed by how Rumplestiltskin's present-day incarnation seems to have turned into an anti-Semitic stereotype, though.

That was so gross and inexplicable. "Mr. Gold"? Really, folks? O.O

Emma makes up for a lot. I'm also really pleased to see a show in which a woman isn't immediately given a romantic interest. (This is also a good thing about Homeland.) I expect Emma to get one eventually, but they didn't feel the need to spend time on it in the first episode.

I really liked how Carrie's bugging Brody's house could also possibly be read as a comment on our voyeurism as television viewers.

I did not notice the anti-Semitic stereotype until you pointed it out. I'm curious how much of that is because I only expect to encounter anti-Semitic stereotypes in my reading material. Of course I never registered the name, but I'm terrible with names.

I really liked Charming in a coma and the active women, especially Emma.

Oh! I like this reading. I noticed a scene that supports it. It was shot so the composition of Brody watching TV on his couch was mirrored with Carrie watching him from her couch. Both, I suppose, suggesting us, the third invisible set of watchers.

I think camera work does a lot of good in this show. It might not be too subtle, but it makes interesting points.

I really want to see HOMELAND...mainly for the case.

I have a small weakness for Damian Lewis. *ahem* I also like Claire Danes - one of the my closest friends was in love with "My So-Called Life" so we had to watch it every week.
