Gaelcon, rah!

Got back to Edinburgh at go-back-to-bed-before-work o'clock this morning after a thoroughly enjoyable Gaelcon. As always, I'm not sure how I spent my weekend (oh! apart from playing No Thanks!, which is crack in a cardgame), but the weekend flew between catching up with old friends I just don't see enough of, re-establishing many acquaintanceships ( Read more... )

Yah, my new game crack is Cutthroat Caverns.

How would you characterise Gaelcon? I've been thinking for a while I need new cons in my life … and I've gotta be careful not to blow a stack of money on going to some Lovecraft thing in the States.

Hmmm...depends very much on what you want from a con, I think. For example, all the Irish cons are reknowned for their social aspect; if you want to play some excellent games *and* get drunk and meet new people, go to an Irish con - my home convention and personal all-time favourite is WarpCon, which is at the end of January in Cork; however, Gaelcon in Dublin at the end of October is also a fairly rockin' weekend. I reckon both of them are well worth the travel, but I'm heavily biased in favour of Irish cons.

Coming up in London at the end of this month is Dragonmeet; usually has a great games line-up but is very English in its character (everyone goes home at six to...I dunno, have bubble and squeak for supper, put on their slippers and watch the telly or something), so latch on to the Irish and Scots if you want a drink afterwards.

In Scottish terms, Conflagration in Glasgow in the third week of February is pretty small, but also incredibly friendly; they haven't had the greatest range of games historically, but this year's con ( ... )

Oh we had plenty veg at the gig too :) Yeah I was really pleased with its trashy content. Venue a bit small, but it solves other problems we had.

Thanks for all that info; I've been looking for an excuse to go to Ireland again …

Have you, in your culinary travels, come across The Enchanted Broccoli Forest by Mollie Katzen? It is an amazing vegetarian cookbook which T, being the Goddess of Squash and Courgettes, loves.

Des Garret tried to buy a copy of Mrs Beeton to go with his new house, but it wasn't in stock at Waterstones on Pana and JB could only find a "print on demand" edition on the list which they ordered - it turned out it was a reprint of the 1874 edition!

No, I haven't, actually...I might look it up, as I really need to get into squashes and courgettes - I'm very bad at coming up with inventive and tasty ways of cooking with vegetables.

And I could make a comment about Des's age and his choice of cookbooks, but I won't - where's his new house?

Hey you, it was really great to see you at Gaelcon! Hope we get a bit more time to catch up at the next con we mutually happen to be attending - Warpcon much? xxx

I reckon so - unless you're going to be at Dragonmeet? Should be good this year, as there's a few of us heading down from here/coming over from home for it...otherwise, Warpcon it is!! :)
