We ended up with a fun discussion about the engineering infrastructure of the Empire, and how it looks like there's lots of high-powered computing, but no networks at all. Because seriously, there's no reason at all someone should have to physically go out to the end of a pier 500 meters in the sky to throw a fucking switch. Except that's how George originally conceived of it, and we all have to work around that now.
Plus they had chompers! Which have been half permanently ruined for me by Galaxy Quest and half made into a delightful personal inside joke by Galaxy Quest.
Agreed on the women. I mean, really? I appreciate your work making this cohere with the original trilogy, in which almost everyone was a guy, but maybe we could just pretend that part of it didn't happen?
OMG yes the chompers! Utterly nonsensical, even in the context of Empire engineering.
I also read a really solid Tumblr post pointing out that the diversity of the strike team combined with their eventual fate results in all the POC dying in order to allow the white people in the next movie to succeed. And not helped by the one black woman on the Council arguing in favor of surrender. Proper representation involves doing more than just adding some brown faces to the cast!
If I had a single change I could make, it would be to make half the Rebels on screen into women. Think how clear that would make the difference between the Rebellion and the Empire...
I agree on all counts, very well put! And I doubt the kids will have nightmares. There was nothing gory. And hey, the good guys DON'T always survive. That's such an American Hollywood thing. I was surprised by that too but I think Disney/Lucasfilm was really trying here for an overtly globally appealing movie.
