So you know how the Pinis have been trying to make a movie of Elfquest since before some of y'all were born?
Hey now... ;-)
Well, the latest attempt has been squashed, because Warner Brothers can't tell the difference between Thorin Oakenshield and Cutter of the Wolfriders. Note to WB: Pini elves have sex.
There is some widespread feeling that this is studio BS, though, because it's really not like Hollywood has ever been reluctant to get two extraordinarily similar film projects going almost simultaneously and then coming out at the same time. See: duelling volcano movies; duelling asteroid movies; and in 2012, duelling Snow White productions.
Granted, seldom (never?) have the two similar projects come out from the SAME STUDIO.
Regardless, though, the argument that ElfQuest is in any way reminiscent of Tolkien -- except inasmuch as they very broadly fit into a category called "fantasy" is just so ludicrous that it's hard to know where to start. Not to mention the fact that The Hobbitses will both be coming out in December,

Hey, thanks for the rec! And interesting to see Durand get a mention in this context, since that was definitely a story where I set out to consciously mimic the style of canon as much as possible, right down to the chapter headings.
I'm trying to figure out how I classify gen stories, and I'm not sure I do, really, beyond some sort of a vague plot vs no plot, canon compliant vs AU axis. Possibly because I have a very broad and blurry definition of gen that basically shakes out to "if the characters' actions and decisions aren't driven by romantic or sexual desire, then it's gen". (Which is probably why I've always clicked best with the mature older characters or married couples in any given canon; even when they're in relationships or getting frisky they're not generally written as driven by their desires in the same way, and so as an aromantic asexual I can relate to how they behave in a way I usually can't with characters my own age.)
