Is Cloud Roads perhaps suitable for an 11 year old capable of complex thought but who is embarrassed about "adult" scenes and who would be way too perturbed at anything rapey, hookery, or overly torture-filled? I can't quite tell from the descriptions!

Hmm. It's fairly violent: the lead characters all have claws & so forth, and there's a number of battle scenes. And the plot involves forced breeding, although it's never shown (merely threatened). The lead has sex once or twice, offscreen but acknowledged openly.

So I would say, maybe not appropriate for an 11-yo. I like Wells' stuff, but I think most of it is a bit adult in content. OTOH, I probably would have eaten it up as a 12-year-old...

I will read it myself and see! It sounds just right for a couple of years from now. I also would have not minded (and indeed gone for) any level of Adult book at that age but my kid just gets squicked!
