Not enough face-palm in the world: Gender essentialism at Nature. And people think we're in a post-feminism universe?

Charlie Pierce, where have you been all my life? (Okay, okay, yeah, but until a few weeks ago I only knew him from WWDTM.)

Interesting breakdown at Graphjam of the demographics of OWS. I would point out that it's based on self ( Read more... )

On second thought, my comment wasn't much better than the original article. I used to talk about my Gathering Instinct years ago, when I sometimes responded to stress by going to the supermarket and buying winter squash.

Wow. Just wow. I think my "favorite" part may have been the comment about how 'it's invariably a woman who gets sent to find it.' Because women are only good for the low-end assistant jobs, you know.

I like to joke about the phenomenon of "Male Refrigerator Blindness," but it's been awhile since I've seen such a condescending piece of crap published ("humor piece" or not) in a serious magazine. How about, some people need to wake the f--- up and start noticing the world around them? Or, some people need to pay attention to what other people say to them, because every fool knows you don't buy underwear at a supermarket Jesus what's wrong with you?Whew. OK. Sorry. A couple of BS real-life circumstances have used up all my patience and put me in rant mode today ( ... )

There's a good bit in The Mind-Body Problem about the question, "Where's the butter?" Because the butter is in the refrigerator (at least in the US) and the male person sitting at the kitchen table knows it is; he's just pointing out that it's not where he wants it to be (right next to his plate) and all his life women have responded by giving him the butter. (The particular subspecies here is the Jewish American Prince.)

Most of these supposed differences can be interpreted to produce the opposite conclusions anyway. If women are better at communication, then only rampant bias can explain why most executives are men.
