Eeeeeeks! The end times are upon us! Vonnielake, bar the door! (That's if this isn't a joke: I got the link off Slashdot.) Also? Poor dogs.

I had a totally lovely day with the divine denyeverything1 yesterday. We had a yummy brunch and bought books (I forget most of them, except I got The Secret History and The Jane Austen Book Club and two Kate Ross Julian Kestrel ( Read more... )

Okay, I'm marginally freaked by the zombie dogs. But I can't seem to figure out what a boffin is.

Found a definition here. It doesn't offer any clues as to the veracity of the article, though.

Why have I never heard of a "boffin" before now?

The article's right. It's English slang for a professor, possibly of the thick-glasses, absent-minded kind and it's been around for a very long time. It has also been used to refer to swots though I think that was mostly in the Bristol area.

It's one of those words that newspaper tabloids use as part of their argot, like dossier, gem, probe (noun, as in investigation) etc etc.

Well, apparently the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research really exists and googling it reveals several published articles from the center on dog exsanguination experiments and some such, so I think that article is genuine. And right here in Pittsburgh, too! Somehow, the combination of two of my favorite things (zombies + dogs) doesn't quite equate to Eeeee!BestThingEvah! Aeeiii.

Oooh, real zombies! I read slashdot through RSS and lately they've had a couple of headlines that are supposedly about zombies (like "AOL most zombie users!" or "Europe has highest concentration of zombies!") only to find out that they're talking about zombie computers and not the undead. So I'm putting un-dead dogs in the real zombie category.

re: metafandom, they take link submissions, I'm pretty sure. The four reccers have a pretty wide net, and while you might not have fallen into it yet, I'm sure cathexys and fabu would be extremely interested in your thoughts.

*g* i was just gonna comment sth along the same lines...

cofax, unless a link shows up on our flist or someone offers up their own posts, we tend to not know about good stuff (i used to look through flist, but just didn't have the time recently)...

fwiw, i'd been thinking about friending you more than once (pretty much every time i end up on your lj and am surprised that i don't have you friended :-), but i tend to regard LJ pretty much as a communication tool and your "i tend not to friend back and tend not to answer comments a lot of times" kind of made me not so it...

though now i'm just gonna do it anyway, even though i still can't promise that it'll change you getting picked up, b/c i'll be offline for 4 weeks.

nice finally meeting you...i know i've commented here before but am not sure we've 'officially' been introduced :-)

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this.

I was, um, pathetically passive-aggressive there, and I apologize. Will try to give you a heads-up in future for any relevant posts. (Not that I've written any lately...)

Sadly, as you may know if you check my userinfo, I'm on limited LJ access during the work day, and it frustrates my ability to use LJ as a communication tool. I'm sorry if that bothers you, but I use LJ for a variety of things, and I simply can't reply to everything or flist everyone reading me. I'd be up all night, replying to comments, or something. Argh. ::tears hair::

I go around and read people who I don't have flisted from time to time, as well. Anyway. Thanks for commenting, and it is nice to "meet" you, so to speak.

hey, i totally "get" that differnt people use lj differenty...and I was simply trying to explain why I hadn't friended even though I liked what I'd seen...

but the real reason I had to answer you with mz very, very limited access at the moment is that I printed out your series for my trip home and read and read and loved and read and finished it before I even hit the tran´-Atlantic flight. It was amazing and I owe you big feedback, but I'm way to jetlagged and exhausted to say more than Wow!!!!! Thank you for an spellbinding amazing story!!!
