How even after everything has gone to hell, there's still something that makes people cling to familiarity. And Mulder's later comparison of the power plant to the house he'd grown up in was a nice echo of that as well.

Sorry, hon! XF is work, nowadays, whereas the SG fic is written in zen mode, and is much much easier by comparison.
