That's probably because in those days, Doctor Who still aspired to teaching kids and people about science, since it was the great hope of the winds of change.
Now we're crap, we know we're crap and we're stuck on living on our past heritage and trying to update it somewhat.
But hey, at least Doctor Who is still out there fighting the good fight.
