So, is hiding your emotions/masking them and pretending to be happy...is that considered lying/not being true to yourself? I don't know, I mean, I do not lie. I hate lies. But is hiding things considered lying? I don't know. I don't know why I do it. I guess it's become a habit or something because I've done it for so long. I just don't want to ( Read more... )

oh my god I know EXACTLY what you mean about feeling obligated to be happy and cheery. I have stuff identical to that in my journals. Weird. And I remember talking about it in a freewrite in Marshall's class once--about how I felt like I always had to be "on" (smilely and happy and stuff), because whenever I wasn't, I'd be bringing people down.
Anyway, I don't think that's lying, unless you explicitly deny (to yourself) the emotions you're REALLY feeling. But, obviously, you are aware when you are in a sad/upset/bad/etc. mood, because you mentally adjust to make yourself seem happy to others. And sure, there's a mask there in the sense that you're not putting yourself out there for everyone to see, but I think that's more of a societal "survival tactic," if you will.
Sorry, I'm kind of blabbering...this is something I feel like I could on on forever about too.

You're not blabbering. And what you're saying completely makes sense to me. Ya know what I think? We should write a book. Or rather, you should.

i wouldn't consider that lying/not being true to yourself. but you don't always have to be happy, but being sad all the time isn't good either.

i think you just have to find a happy medium.
