Random Essay #3: Dee on adoption, his camp kids, and Bikky

Adoption

Oh geez, how do I start? Probably with canon stuff, right? Right. Okay. So in canon, Dee...doesn't exactly adopt anyone. Sure, he has Bikky and Carol, but if you look really closely, especially in Volume 2 Act 6 when Dee goes to visit the orphange he grew up in, you see how the kids react to him. Which is surprising, considering how Bikky and Carol act towards him. This is what gave me the idea that Dee "not-adopts" - he won't say "Oh, so and so is my son raaawr" but he'll be more protective, go out of his way to do things for them, etc. Since he doesn't exactly have a real family of his own, Dee goes about making his own somewhat-retarded extended family in his own way. And because he came to camp, where there are kids who don't yell at him and actually look up to him and seek him out for certain things, he feels as if he has some responsibility for those he has claimed as "his". More on this in detail later.

So anyway, yes. He doesn't expect his kids to call him 'dad' or anything like that, nor does he expect them to really realize he does it, because hell, he'll never admit it in many cases. Some people may point it out, and he'll get grumpy about it, but it is the truth. He has his own little group of kids that he considers his and nobody can change that. A good post to look at would be Atsuko's kids vs. Dee's kids. Those three are the official ones, as in camp, canon, or general stuff decided.

Ahaha, this is where it gets complicated trying to explain it. 8D So I'll just move n.

He doesn't do this completely consciously. Usually it's something that's mentioned to him or something that he sees that makes him not-adopt. Well...yeah, let's stick with that. So why does he do it? That's...hard to explain. Like I said before, Dee doesn't have his own family, and the only one he does have is currently back at home, with the exception of Bikky, who just came into camp. His important people - the ones he wants to protect - are out of his reach. And I think, in a way, he's making his own little family here, so Dee'll feel that he's needed, and he can do his job as both a cop and as an adult. Without it, I think he'd be more prone to emo than he is now. Which...is another essay all together.

Camp Kids

Dee's list of camp kids that are 'his' grows every freakin' day. There are some that he just keeps an eye on, and then there's others where he'll drop everything for them. A good example of this, lol, is tossing Yzak and Dearka into the empty room during the Screw Dance. I was going to essay on all of the camp kids, but since they just keep coming, I'm going with the ones that are the most important to him, which are...the first couple of kids he adopted. And there are the groups of kids, too, so maybe I can fit everyone into this. 8D

Yzak and Dearka: Teehee. Dee's "retarded sons", as I so lovingly call them in IRC. Lemme start with Yzak; he was one of the first kids who Dee met when he arrived, and at first, Dee was surprised by how mature he was and how kind he was to offer his bed in Cabin 10. But as Dee got to know Yzak and learn about his world through him and other people from the SEED cast, Dee kinda...got protective. In some ways, it's not fatherly; if anything, Yzak is more of a brother than a son, especially when you look at their conversations. But either way, he is very protective. He doesn't do this in a way to make Yzak feel like a kid; it's just how he is. He could care less about Yzak being a commander in ZAFT and fighting in two wars and yadda yadda - in Dee's eyes, Yzak's barely an adult, and someone who doesn't seem like he had much of a real childhood. And since it sounds like I'm essaying on Yzak and Dee's thoughts on him, yeah...I'm just gonna go with that. Yzak is a VERY important person to Dee. If Yzak is upset, Dee isn't happy until he learns why and tries to somehow make it better (again, Screw Dance). And by extension - one way to put it - so is Dearka.

There's more on Yzak, but god, that's an essay all on it's own, especially with recent events and conversations in camp.

Dearka's kind of...hard to explain. He and Dee have spoken a good number of times, and Dee likes him. He's funny, great kid, etc. I think Dee ended up considering Dearka one of his when he found out that he and Yzak were together. That there immediately had Dee keeping an eye on Dearka, because Dearka = important person to Yzak = important person to Dee. Har har, math. Anyway, if something happened to Dearka, it would upset Yzak, and in turn, would upset Dee. And really, it's not the whole "Yzak's boyfriend" thing, either. Dearka's another one of those kids that he talks to all the time, and has known since probably the beginning. Again, see the Screw Dance.

Kairi: She is Dee's camp daughter, officially, and the only one out of everyone in camp who he'll admit to having adopted and claiming as one of his kids without being grumpy about it. She reminds him in many ways of Carol back home, which was probably one of the reasons why he was so drawn to her. That, and they have some really great conversations. And even though Kairi probably has a mafia the size of Orihime's, Dee is still protective of her. Hell, it gets to the point sometimes that he wants to yell at people for cursing at her. That's how important she is to him. But again...ahahaaaaa yet another essay. Kairi and Dee's relationship, unlike Yzak and Dee's is more father-daughter, probably because Kairi is a kid, and Dee is old enough to be her dad, and well, their conversations. Dee goes out of his way to do stuff for her, to make her feel welcomed (ie: getting her involved in the Football club, letting her in on the supaa secret stuff, etc). He likes making her happy. She's Dee's girl. 'Nough said.

Cabin 10: Er. I really don't know how it happened. But Dee is "fond" of the kids in his cabin in the way he is "fond" of Bikky in some ways. They're brats sometimes, but he gets along with all of them for the most part. That, and he's thankful that they let him live there. And from that, he feels as if he's obligated to watch out for them. He's not close with some of them, but that really doesn't change anything. Obligation, responsibility, and well, fondness is why they're considered "his kids" somewhere in the deepest darkest corner of his mind.

Football kids: To put it in simple terms; there would be no football club or any more games, or at least - they wouldn't be held as often - if it weren't for the ES21 kids. He likes that they're happy over something so simple, yet so important to them, and Dee understands that. Which is why he does it. He thinks they're all great in their own little ways (Yes, even Hiruma sometimes) and well...do you think he'd really go out of his way to spruce up the field if they weren't in camp? I think not.

And I could go on and on and list every other kid and explain why, but I think everyone gets the picture by now, especially if this makes sense. XD [link to actual camp kids list goes here once I stop being lazy and make it]

Bikky

Yay, Bikky's in camp! And now that he is, people get to see a whole 'nother side to Dee. Bikky isn't exactly Dee's son; if you were to generalize their relationship and interactions, you'd probably say they're more like brothers who don't get along. But if you go in depth and look into it, it really is some sort of retarded father-son relationship somewhere in there, and I'll try to explain it here.

To put it blunty, Dee and Bikky don't get along. Why? Because of Ryo. Bikky thinks the world of Ryo and doesn't like that Dee is trying to get in his pants. Dee loves Ryo and doesn't like Bikky because he's a cockblocker and won't give him a moment alone. Which is understable.

Buuuut there's other things. Like in the OVA/Volume 2 where they see the ghost and Ryo thinks they're crazy. Or when Dee and Bikky are trapped in the school with the bomber and Dee throws Bikky out the window to protect him. That scene in the manga made me think seriously on their relationship; if Dee seriously did hate Bikky and could care less, why would he do that? Why not let Bikky stay with him and difuse the bomb with him there, despite the dangers? I don't think Dee did it just for Ryo's sake - sure, it is a big factor in the whole thing, especially because Bikky is very important to Ryo - but there's another factor there. It's...hmm.

For all the arguing and yelling and beating on each other there is, Bikky and Dee are almost exactly alike. Both grew up on the streets; both are orphans (though Bikky hasn't been one all his life like Dee); both are very gruff and straight-forward. I think, in a way, Dee sees himself in Bikky, and because of that, he feels as if he has to...I don't know, be some kind of retarded father-figure in his life and watch out for him. Which is why he doesn't back-off. Because really, who would stick around that long when kids keep interfering in a relationship? XD

So, uh. Those are my jambled thoughts. Feel free to comment and contradict anything I say. 8D
