And now for Alexandria picspam. As usual in a bid to conserve space, there's not a load of pictures, but just the ones I liked the most. (Be warned: there's no underwater pics because the seal on my camera broke on the first dive. Meaning I had 70 pounds worth of ruined camera.)

After this he viewed the body of Alexander and actually touched it...but he declined to view the remains of the Ptolemies, remarking, 'I wished to see a king, not corpses...' )

real life, randomness, squee, classics, alexander

Alexander in your quote seems rather blase about the sea monster :p

Also, LIBRARY!!! Ahh it looks so pretty!!! There are no decent libraries in the UK (or none that I've seen anyway...) =(

And I laughed at your identifying the Alexander statue in your sneaky pic, you are too obsessed m'dear =D

Yeah, he does, doesn't he? In fact he seems more annoyed about the loss of the treasure than because Hephaistion got eaten/drowned.

I knooooow. That library made me seriously envious. Oh how I wish they had a library like that somewhere in London.

It's not an obsession until it turns into Alexander stalking. Oh wait... XD

All of that is so freaking cool. If I wasn't such a natural science nerd I'd totally be way into history and archaeology and things. (I actually gasped aloud at the Serapeum. So. Amazing.)

I love the "A sea monster ate my BFF. I was a bit miffed." bit. And the high-school-AU blurb for that film. :D

The Serapeum was the total highlight of my trip (minus the Alexander head, of course). It was a case of 'I am standing in the Library of Alexandria. I am standing in the Library of Alexandria. OMG!' I'm not trying to convert your from the dark side natural science. Not at all. *Cough*

The AU-high-school blurb was nowhere near as bad of the trailer. I watched it, and it was a case of 'my eeeeeyes, it burns!'.

And once again, I am incredibly jealous. I really want to get into more of the ancient egyptian and persian history and culture, but my school only does greek and roman, which I'm fine with for the moment (three languages at a time plus english is about as much as I can handle XD).

Anyway, beautiful pictures, and your Alexander head is gorgeous.

Off I go to bury myself in Astronomy. Why I took this class no one knows, for it equals hell. Burning, fiery hell.

Ah, see I think I'm really lucky. My Personal Tutor at Uni was/is a complete Persian nut. (This is the one that advised on the Aleander film.) So really I've had the best of all worlds, because she was trying to teach me sanskrit and then I had my other courses in Graeco-Roman topics and there were options to do Egyptology as well. (Hence the thesis on the Library of Alexandria). Still, stick with the Graeco-Roman stuff, because that's the most fun (if it has Alexander in it)! Chosen your courses yet?

And three languages? Good god woman, you're a genius! Dare I ask what they are?

The Alexander head = much love. It is patted daily and admired. XD

I salute your bravery in doing Astronomy. I think I'd be too terrified to even think about doing it.

that is really cool; one of the disadvantages of such a small school is that we dont really have a lot of options for study...but im still having a lot of fun. i'm in latin and greek (and i'll be doing russian next semester), astronomy, and a russian short fiction class. so... fun, but potentially evil.

So I know this is kinda lame, but cause of you and my interest in the classical world, my major in university is now a double: Medieval Studies and Classics. Haha

Oh go you! That's absolutely brilliant! :D Is it your first year at uni? What inspired you to swap? Arrgh, so many questions! What courses have you chosen? (I hope there's some Alexander in there! ;D)

Lol. Its my second actually, but I figure my first doesnt count cause I was at a horrible school, and we had to take core classes instead of anything to do with our majors. I was always intending to be a history major, although I never really planned on having my focus be the classics. This semester I have more of my Medieval Classes. Im taking Ancient Greek, Renaissance Middle Ages, Development of Europe, Brit Lit to 1800, and Literature of Immigrants (it sounded interesting plus it fulfills my Global Awareness requirement). Originally I was taking Greek and Roman mythology, but the professor put me to sleep in 5 minutes so Im going to wait on that. Spring semester I intend to do more of my classics classes. Haha. More questions?

SO JEALOUS. That is kind of all my brain can come up with at the moment as far as your pictures go. I wish I somehow miraculously found the money to go do all that. (I am torn between being horrified, offended, and amused at the bad museum labels, though. Or being very, very sad.)

Clearly, the sea monster wanted Hephaistion all for itself, which is not surprising. He's Hephaistion. (I totally had the same discussion about Alexander and Hephaistion in two very different classes the other day - in relation to the Iliad in one, and in relation to the Epic of Gilgamesh in the other. It was a lovely day.)

The Adventures of Young Alexander frightens me. That's just. Not okay.
