What translation did you read? I am a native Russian speaker, and, in my humble opinion, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation is the closest to how the book sounds/feels in Russian.

Hi Gene -- my copy was a translation by Diana Burgin and Katherine Tiernan O'Connor, published by Picador in the UK in 1997.

I am about to read this book, and found your review/comments most helpful. I went through a 'sci-fi/fantasy stage some time ago. It was interesting as a genre, but not generally to my taste.

I just wanted to say that your review was/is well written, cogent and explanatory. Thank you.
