I like the second. The design seems cleaner. And I think vertical style, while cool conceptually, really just results in everyone turning your card. But, there's no bad choice here.
I vote #2. The horizontal arrangement makes the silly crown more prominent, plus it allows you to add "Ph.D." to the end of your name, better emphasizing the fact that you are not a lowly teaching assistant or secretary or toilet scrubber at Columbia. To make this card stand out from all the other horizontally aligned business cards, however, I think you should have yours printed on cardstock with a leopard or tiger patterned watermark.
Apparently, that's the full name of the school, not exactly sure why. When they called to set up the first interview, they used the whole name, and I was like, 'yeah, I know where columbia is; i think people usually look that up BEFORE they apply to a job.' lol
I hadn't thought of that, but there are a lot of type a folks in this profession who might get annoyed by a vertically formatted card. i'm not sure whether i'm more or less likely to get that one now....
