Taxes done

I went through the website http://www.in.gov/dor/epay and paid my taxes online. They charged me $1 for doing it online and 2% for the credit card transaction. I ended up spending the same amount that I earned today from tutoring, easy come easy go ( Read more... )

You are soooo right about the charges for services that are convenient for both patron and vendor. We used the epay last year as well and liked it. You'd think they'd give you a discount, not an extra charge, to do it electronically.

Sure its convenient for both the customer and the vendor, but don't forget that the vendor also has to pay for the hardware and the staff/labor to create that system and keep it up and running. The 2% credit card transaction fee is probably almost the same amount they get charged by your credit card company for using the service.

Yeah, I have no quarrel with the CC fee; I think you are correct and that probably does cover the fees they have to pay.

Still, the point is that they charge $1 for an electronic transaction and $0 for a written check... It will take some convincing for me to believe that it costs more for the ePay system than it does for the legacy system, even if it is so new that they are still covering the setup costs (which I don't know is true).

The legacy system is already paid for, and I'm almost certain that it is used more often than ePay. Most people still don't feel safe giving up their personal information online and they'd rather use a system that is proven to have worked for many years.

The legacy system is some dude opening envelopes and endorsing checks with a rubber stamp. Humans insist on being paid a salary which is much more than the costs of maintaining an automated system.
