Fire Up the John Deere!

Mar 28, 2013 14:32

This morning, as on so many other mornings, I awoke around 6:10, put on my shoes, slipped out the back door, opened the sliding gate behind the house--being careful not to tread on white and black splotches on the ground--and unhooked the cable that releases the door that becomes a sloping surface connected to the ground for our six chickens.  ( Read more... )

Wow, you take your time, but when you update, you really update. I had no idea. It sounds like domesticity is doing you wonderfully well.

Speaking of goats... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IuRzJRrRpQ

I often say that it's having a child that has caused me not to update, though even when I've had the time, I've had some writer's block. I guess there's also less incentive, because LJ has seemed like a ghost town the last couple years.

Anyhow, yes, my personality rejected the idea of "domesticity" for many years, though it has resulted in wonderful companionship and has forced me to get my finances in order as well as cutting down on my tendency toward binge eating and drinking when I'm alone with time on my hands--even though I occasionally long for a day when I can return to going to late night concerts and sleeping in 'til noon if I choose.

This urban farming stuff just adds a big layer of adventure to the whole marriage and family thing.

There's a fenced-in part of the yard that's already being looked at for the goats. However, I agree that it will require a tremendous amount of work to keep them out of trouble, and the one person (not C) who is especially pushing for the idea has a history of purchasing pets impulsively and then realizing she's taken on more than she can handle. I'm not at all yet sold on the idea.

Yes they are--and so much more cute when I can see them for a few minutes at a petting zoo or some such place and not my flippin' backyard. :)

My mother-in-law's rather well connected. It is pretty amazing what happens on this property and how little I know about a lot of it. As with the chickens, my interactions with and knowledge of the bees is scant. I know there is a neighbor down the street with a hive, and I believe that our queen/s going rogue had something to do with that. I wasn't around when the professional beekeeper was here, so I don't know what magic he worked. I only know each time took hours to resolve and was very touch and go!

All I know about bees I learned from Irwin Allen. :-D If the bees on the property get out of control, just call Richard Widmark, okay?

Also? This is one of my favorite film scores ever. Easily in my Top 10, if not Top 5.

I wish the track I admire the best was on YouTube so I could share, but sadly it is not. The link above has two pieces from the film, including the fabulous & incredible end credit piece.

God damn, I miss Goldsmith.
