soulless technology [pb]

Currently my research focuses on using AI, robots, and RFID to help elders live independent lives for as long as possible. One of my colleagues (thanks tamiaka!) just sent me a link to the following gadget, marketed for older folk: it finds your keys, and sometimes reminds you to take your meds. I like that we both took issue, but my problem was with the
"[...] we’re talking about those who raised us and who spared no efforts in order to make us the happiest people on earth."

It is quite an assumption to think everyone was raise in such a fashion, as well as that all "old people" *have* someone (or the money to able to afford a someone) able to give them such care.

As so often happens, you cut to the quick. "Quite an assumption" is a polite way of saying "unfixably, stupidly, shockingly wrong." :-)

All the people who want to care for old people for a living, and several times as many people who don't, are already so employed.

That's about 70% of my point. The other 30%: a lot of people don't actually wish to be cared for by various younger people; they would rather live independently and poorly. (To the sobering tune of "70% would rather die than be institutionalized.")

Being much closer to the other end of this one, I will also go with seriously exasperated. I have every expectation that if I need it you guys will be there for me. But I'd prefer not to need it, and every technological aid I can get I'll take.

I have known you for too long to try to take your internets. (Avg time to reach this conclusion: ~5.7 seconds)
