I don't wish to offend anyone, because I think half of you on my friends list have done this at one time or another, but one of the little things that irks me the most is when people say that they are behind someone MORE than 100
( Read more... )
Ahahaha. This is SO something that's always annoyed me, too.
In fact, I remember back years ago when people started doing the whole "I'm behind you 100% thing." It was a few years before I started hearing people do the "I'm behind you 110%." When I heard that, I'd always tell people that since that doesn't mean anything, why stop there? Why not 115%? 200%? And my theory was verified as I watched it creep up and up (since why stop?).
And then the climax of all was during the Michael Jackson trial, I saw one interview with one of his brothers who said, and I quote: "We're all behind him 1000%." Bwahahaha
I now am just waiting to hear someone say they're behind someone a million percent. Because as I said at the beginning....why stop once you're into imaginary figures? :p
Hmm You are both right and wrong. If someone claims to give "110% effort", then, clearly, as in absolute terms, it is not possible to give more than 100% we know that they are talking in relative terms - to how much they usually try, to how much the opponents are expected to try, to how much effort would be needed for a 70% chance of winning, we don't know. So, if someone else says "Well, I'm going to give 120% effort", they could be telling the truth. However if a third person comes along and says "I will give 100%" we should assume they will try the hardest as although that could also be a relative statment, it can equally be an absolute one, and it behoves us well in such an instance to consider it an absolute reference. I was thinking about this last week.
