There’s a guy in my astronomy class who has a large tattoo on his shoulder. It’s a parchment scroll, and then in big letters, it says in a fancy script, “In God I trust” and under that (still in the parchment), “In pain I overcome.” And then underneath the parchment scroll, there’s another large tattoo of a fancy-ish cross ( Read more... )

You're cracking me up! I agree, though. "In pain I overcome" makes no sense to me.

See, "In God I Trust" can be re-written as "I trust in God". What happens to "In pain I overcome"? Well, of course, we find ourselves with "I overcome in pain". The question then remains, "Overcome what?"
(Takes a divertion to point out the superiority of the English way of using quotation marks as demonstrated in the above paragraph)
Perhaps he is missing a comma, or more likely, a semi-colon
"In pain, I overcome" almost makes sence though we still feel the urge to ask "overcome what?"

Exactly. Except I didn't need to switch 'em around; Latin and Greek are both fond of having the verb as the last thing in the phrase. As is German, as you know. ;)

What's this English way, though, of using quotation marks of which you speak? English like British? Or English like this is something I already know and am just spacing off on?

"In pain I overcome":

Through the test of will and the pain it may cause I willingly commit myself to succeed in all that I decide to do.
