Bedtime Stories

David scrubbed his hands over his face as he hurried down the darkened corridors of the city, it was nearly midnight and he was really very tired, even though he’d unexpectedly managed two hours of sleep on his laptop in the lab. He was so annoyed with himself, he’d missed Robbie and Angel’s bedtime and now was missing what little time he had with Evan, even though they would just be wrapped around each other and sleeping; well Evan would, David would probably just lie there in the dark, straining to hear the tiny noises of his children sleeping, still trying to work out how he had gotten to this perfect, but exhausting, time in his life.
The doors to their quarters slid open silently and David stepped inside. The large main living area was in darkness, but the children’s bedroom was lit, so David went there, he stopped in the doorway to watch and listen.
Evan was sitting in the huge handmade chair that Ronon had given them when the babies had been born, it had wide padded arms, and despite being made mostly of wood and covered with cushions in muted reds and browns, David knew it was really comfortable. To either side of the chair was a crib, one for each child, shipped all the way from Earth via the Daedalus. Evan was in the chair, Angel wrapped in a soft pink blanket in one arm and holding a data pad in the other hand. He was reading, his voice soft and low.
“Following the natives displeasure at our presence on their holy ground, we rapidly evacuated the settlement, and made our way at speed to the Stargate for the return to Atlantis. No trade was made at this time. Suggest not visiting P2R- 886 again. Injuries sustained: Sergeant Jeff Daniels, sprain to left ankle, dislocated left shoulder. Dr. Danesh, one black eye from.”
“Are you reading Mission Reports to her?” David interrupted. Angel immediately started fussing in Evan’s arms. Evan lowered the data pad and gently bounced Angel.
“Shush Honey. It’s just Daddy home from work.” Evan soothed their daughter
“Mission Reports?” David asked again much quieter this time as he crossed the room and squatted down in front of the chair, reaching out to smooth the tuft of dark blonde hair on Angel’s head.
“Well it’s not like she can understand the words.” Evan reasoned. “She just likes to hear my voice.” Evan balanced the data pad on his knee, and ran his free hand down the side of David’s face. “She’ll probably drop right off now you’re home; she likes to hear your voice too. Robbie’s already asleep” David used Evan’s knee to push himself up and went to the crib where Robbie was sound asleep spread out like a little starfish. David kissed the tips of his fingers and then touched Robbies forehead, transferring the kiss to their son.
“’Night baby.” He whispered.
“Come and sit with us?” Evan asked, so David dropped to the floor and settled himself between Evan’s knees. “Here, you take her for a while.” Evan carefully passed Angel over David’s shoulder into his waiting arms. Evan rested his now empty hands on David’s shoulders and leant forward dropping a kiss on the back of David’s head.
“Love you.” Evan sighed “I Love you all so much.” David raised his free hand to his shoulder and tangled his finger’s with Evan’s.
“Me too.” David replied hoarsely. Evan kissed him again and then sat back in the chair, picking up the data pad.
“Now who wants to know how Dr. Danesh got his black eye?”
