Skype explains why its VOIP network imploded last week:

The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users' computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update

It really doesn't pass the smell test. Because not only is the default update time 3 AM local, as you say, but also there is a random offset for each computer in order to distribute the load on Microsoft's servers. There's no way all those computers rebooted at exactly the same time. The random offset is anywhere from +/- 30 to 180 minutes.
