When he was a kid, Andy loved to play pretend. He would make up stories with his toys, would have Woody kidnapped by aliens and Buzz would come save the day and they would both escape on Buzz's spaceship. Sometimes, he would turn Hamm into Evil Dr. Porkchop who would rob a bank and take Mr. Potato Head as hostage until Sheriff Woody would come to the rescue with his sidekick Slinky.
This wasn't pretend. He was all grown-up now so he knew there would be no Buzz Lightyear to swoop down and rescue him, yelling, "To infinity and beyond," no Woody to come grab his hand. Andy held on to the edge of a cliff, hoping to God that the ropes wouldn't snap or his harness wouldn't come lose.
Why did he ever let Sid talk him into going rock climbing?
The answer was pretty obvious. It was because he was stupid for Sid that he'd do anything Sid asked him to, just like he always did when they were kids.
"You gotta swing your leg up, babe!" Sid yelled down at him. "Try to push yourself up."
No way. There was no way Andy would move an inch, fearing that gravity would take him and-
He shook off the not-so-pretty images that flashed in his mind and looked up to where Sid was hanging against the side of a steep rock face some seven feet above him, fingers clutching on the cracks as he descended, yelling, "Hang on, Andy! I'll come get you!"
Andy could hear his college buddies as well as Sid's friends laughing but he couldn't bring himself to care. All he cared about was to be on top of that ledge and safe in his boyfriend's arms. "Hurry!" His voice was small and pinched despite his attempt to holler.
This was so not the summer Andy had anticipated. He was supposed to be in a beach somewhere getting tanned or in a tent with Sid and fucking like animals in heat.
Maybe this was his fault. Andy had insisted that Sid should mingle with his friends from school so Sid would stop being jealous and when Sid did, he and Andy's friends talked endlessly about signing up for this summer trip. "It will be an adventure," Sid had said while sucking a mark on Andy's neck one night, which reduced Andy into a whimpering mess and had no choice but to acquiesce.
"I'm almost there. Hang on!" Sid's voice echoed, bringing Andy back to the present.
Andy was relieved when Sid planted his feet on the flat surface of the ledge and reached down to grab Andy's arm. Andy held onto him like his whole life depended on Sid - figuratively and literally.
Sid was strong and that was one of the many things Andy loved about him. With one yank, Sid hauled him up to the ledge and Andy instantly fell into the circle of Sid's arms.
"That was scary." Andy clung a little longer, panting, doing his best to stop shaking and he only looked up when Sid laughed softly.
"You wouldn't have fallen," Sid said, tugging at the rope still attached to Andy's harness. "You're well secured. I made sure of that."
"Still." Andy's face burned hot from embarrassment when he saw his friends, Tim and Neil, and a couple of their climbing instructors watching them. He pressed his back against the hollow curve of the rock wall. "I could've died and I bet you wouldn't even be sorry."
"Oh, c'mon." Sid cupped Andy's hips, pressing himself against Andy. "I'd be devastated. But do you honestly think I'd let that happen."
Honestly? No. Andy trusted Sid enough that he knew Sid would make sure he stayed safe.
"I've had enough of this. Can we go down?" Andy was quick to add, "In the easiest way possible," when a smirk formed on Sid's lips.
"Sure." Sid tugged on Andy's harness, presumably checking if they were still tight enough. "Maybe we can go rafting next?"
"Oh no." Andy pressed his forehead on Sid's shoulder. "Why can't we do something fun that doesn't involve risking our lives?"
"Like having sex?" Sid's voice was low, almost a purr and it sent shivers down Andy's body straight to his crotch.
Andy could feel a goofy smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Yeah. That sounds more fun." He could bet his face was masked with the desire to have Sid inside him because Sid's eyes had gone dark and he looked at Andy like he wanted to devour him right there and then, which Andy wouldn't have mind, except….
Sid pressed a quick kiss on Andy's lips. "Maybe we can go back to the tent while the others go rafting."
That sounded more like an adventure. The kind of adventure Andy preferred.
