I'm going to keep working on my book. There is so much work and reworking to be done to it, and I realize this and don't think it's automatically done just because it's December

I, sadly, abandoned mine when I went to NYC for a week and felt that I couldn't handle playing catch-up. Not that I think I'll abandon the ideas entirely. After all, I have quite a few pages of preliminary notes.
As you stated, NaNoWriMo is more about building confidence than it is about creating a readable product. Not to mention it reduces to ground level what seemed insurmountable: 30 small steps becomes one great leap.
(I mix a helluva metaphor, don't I? At least they were both height-related.)
I think it is also about developing a habit--I don't know about you, but I had set aside 8-9 A.M. daily to work on NaNoWriMo, and if I had done a better job of making that a permanent part of my schedule, I'm sure I could crank out a few worthy pages here and there over months and years.
People who sneer at those who do NaNo make me laugh. They just want to see themselves as some elitist writing group. But then they tend to miss the point entirely, so I just ignore them.
I'll just continue to be thankful that Chris and Co started it to get me back into writing, because like you without it I doubt I would have picked the habit back up at all, or began to research better writing techniques/concepts/constructions/so on.
