Blues at Dawn
By Langston Hughes
I don't dare start thinking in the morning.
I don't dare start thinking in the morning.
If I thought thoughts in bed,
Them thoughts would bust my head-
So I don't dare start thinking in the morning.
I don't dare remember in the morning
Don't dare remember in the morning.
If I recall the day before,
I wouldn't get up no more-
So I don't dare remember in the morning.
Notes
Can I just please burn this? Honestly, I'm so picky when it comes to my poetry, but I cannot stand this response. It's this poem in particular that makes me question why I even bother attempting poetry.
Response
It begins and ends in a bed.
Life begins as love blossoms
And ends as death takes its hold.
As bleary eyes open,
A new day is born.
And as weary eyes close,
A day passes on.
It begins and ends in a bed.
Weights lift and monsters flee.
But as the day breaks
And the sun fills the room,
Memories slowly return.
All the dreams in the world
As well as the nightmares disappear
As well as begin.
As the present fades into the past,
A future falls into my lap.
My courage will rise with the sun,
But wane with the rising of the moon.
The fantasy will release me
Into the murky waters of reality.
Will the shock of the icy water be too much?
It begins and ends in a bed.
