Pthalates and Your ADD Child

Feb 25, 2010 08:47

1. There is a strong link (in a small study) connecting use of pthalates-containing products during pregnancy with kids who have ADD, not to mention various other not-so-good possible effects.

2. Many cosmetics, lotion, shampoo, nail polish, etc. contain pthalates.

3. They usually don't list it in the ingredient list.

Conclusion: WTF, world? Gah

science, spawn, activism, link

Jeeze. I've always shied away from cosmetics; maybe my hind brain is smarter than I thought. Makes me wonder what else pthalates do that makes them so attractive to all these companies.

The worst thing is that there's no real way for the average person to even be able to find out about this kind of stuff.

Although not the kind of pthalates that cause the problem, interestingly enough. It's linked to cosmetic pthalates and *not* plastics pthalates. They tested that too.

Ugh. I usually try to hit the cosmetics database to help avoid terrible stuff - but without it being in the ingredient list, what do you do? Well, I don't use makeup very often, but still.

I know. Exactly.

I really do go to the cosmetics database, and I buy stuff from the co-op that I assume is "better" than the other stuff. But I know this is only reducing my exposure to toxic crap, not eliminating it.

magazine, which is produced in conjunction with my uber lefty/green/eco/health whatever gym, Lifetime fitness, I *know* has done article(s) on this - I think I read an article on this in the past couple months, but at the time I was catching up on about 6 months of articles so I don't know exactly when it was published. I can try to look it up for you if you want, or you can probably find it in their archives online. The reason I mention it is I'm sure their articles will either point out products they know are pthalate-free, or list websites you can go that list products that are pthalate free.

If you were able to find it, that would be awesome.
