My Books-to-Read List

May 01, 2009 09:09

I have a massive and ever-growing list of books to read. It seems unlikely I'll ever make the list vanish--I tend to add 2 new books for every 1 I read. With that in mind, I'm soliciting for people's opinions on which books within this list I should read first. Take a look under the cut, if you feel like it ( Read more... )

Oh, good point about CONvergence! (And yes, I'll be going this year too.)

That's a heck of a list. Brief opinions on some of the ones I've read: I enjoyed the Mike Carey books. Obviously, I love the Brust book, I like the Wild Cards books and have almost all of them. The first 8 or so are the best, along with Deuces Down. I like Rex Stout as palate cleansers and have read most of the Wolfe series-it kind of zips along nicely between heavier stuff. I didn't find Many Bloody Returns to be worth it, I love Dead Like Me, I like Vachss, but it can get really depressing and the series seems to be suffering from More!Bigger! syndrome. Oh, for sure Fragile Things/Graveyard book and Amber series. Would you like some/all of the Amber series sent to you sometime in July? (for free to keep/do with what you will) I ask 'cause I've got it all in individual paperbacks in storage in NJ, and in the interim, I'd picked it up in 2 hardcovers, so the paperbacks need homes- the next time I'll be in NJ will probably be June/July.

Thanks for the recommendations! And sure, if you wanted to send the Amber books my way, that'd be great!

I've not had a chance to read Turn Coat yet, and need to find a copy of Mean Streets, but will always recommend Butcher. I'm also really enjoying the Sharing Knife series.

Dethworld is interesting, but probably shouldn't go near the top of your list. The sequels are skippable.

Old Man's War and the sequels are fantastic. My wife is supposed to pick my copy of Zoe's Tale up today.

Little Brother is great in a near-future-scary kind of way, and a fast read (and free online). Doctorow's i, robot and I, Rowboat are both in my to-read pile.

I read the Amber series in high school, but don't remember being impressed with it.

The Myth series is always fun, and a good break if you have been reading a lot of heavy stuff, so I'd pick up a used copy to read in between other things.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've read all the other Butcher books and liked them, and I generally enjoy Doctorow, too.

I'd move China Mountain Zhang up - it's a very striking book both in terms of plot and storytelling style.

I've read some of the others, but none of them stick out especially.

China Mountain Zhang duly moved up--I know we have similar tastes in reading material.

Wow - that's longer than my list. I see you have The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan on your list twice...well, he's my favorite author ever and I loved The Steel Remains. Some people hated it, some people loved it. His specialty is future noir, so if you like that sort of thing...

And I think you'll need the slow cooker cookbook if you're going to actually read all these!

Yeah, I've been building this list for a while! I do really like future noir (I wish there was more of it), and I've enjoyed everything else by Richard Morgan that I've read.

A slow cooker is a great timesaver. Most of my reading these days is done on my bus commute, but I want to carve out more time to read in the evenings. Of course, then it runs smack-dab into everything else I want to carve out more time to do. Sigh....
