I first heard about it a few years ago when a boy died of it after swimming somewhere in South Texas and I had the same reaction. WTFAMOEBABBQ! They warned against swimming in warm, stagnant pools of water and I thought hmm.. in Texas? Aren't they all?
I hadn't heard of it before and it was on the Yahoo front page. Yeah, it's only killed 6 this year, but that's 6 more than I'd like to hear about. It just seems very B-list horror movie-esque. I live in Southeast Texas and am very glad that I have a minute fear of swimming in lakes or other large bodies of water.
