Now that I have them, how do I wash them?!?

So, I just got my first pack of unbleached (natural) prefolds from Natural Babies and two covers (a Bummi and a Prowrap). I know that I'm supposed to wash and dry the diapers about five times before using in very hot water. But, I don't know if the detergent that I already have is okay for the diapers. It's called "Country Save." It's labeled as " ( Read more... )

I hope that I can answer these!

The detergent sounds okay to me. I'm under the impression that the detergent isn't that important as long as it doesn't have bleach or something like that in it. I don't worry about using to much because I wash it through twice. Once with detergent, one with out. Also, I believe that I use the same detergent as you. I buy it in bulk from the local health food store.

I wash my covers with the diaper, though I let them dry hanging over a towel bar... We use the sort of plasticy lined covers, so they dry fast.

Don't worry about the vinegar until the diapers have been peed in ;-) Then throw it in the 1st rinse cycle.

What seems to work best for us, is to fill the washer about 3/4 of the amount that I would normall fill it with clothes. You may just have to work this out through trial and error.

I hope that helps some, I know I didn't cover all your questions!

I've tried a few different ways of washing dd's diapers, and this is what works best for us(we use Kooshies Ultra AIO's)

1st cycle- Cold with 1/2 cup borax
2nd cycle- Hot with 1 scoop oxy clean and detergent(I use All free and clear)
3rd cycle- Cold with vinegar on the rinse cycle

I try to hang them outside when I can too!

That detergent is probably fine for washing your dipes, but you might want to use a stronger detergent for breaking them in, since you got unbleached. The cotton still has the natural oils coating it, and that's what you need to wash off.

I wash my covers along with my diapers, I just don't put them in the dryer.

You can also boil the dipes in a big pot of water on the stove. That will help to break the oils down faster.

I use All Free and clear on our diapers... I throw everything in the washer, and do a 2nd rinse cycle. If they're really dirty (bad poo's) I'll do a prewash. You can throw the covers in the wash cycle with the diapers. I have hangars hanging above the washer and dryer taht I put our fleece liners and covers on.

I like snappis... I put the prefold on how the directions say and then tuck the legs up a bit.
