Thanks to everyone to answered my questions about washing. I take it newborn runny poo just dissolves in water and goes down the drain? I imagine there'd be some residue still in the washer, I guess that's what running the extra rinse is foor ( Read more... )

I'll try to answer as many as I can. The newborn poo dissolves in the washer, no residue left. The extra rinse is to get the risidual detergent out of the diaper. No need to dry in between. I don't think a dryer adds that much wear and tear to prefolds. Covers - yes, prefolds no.
Bleach will wear them out faster. If you're disturbed by stains, put the diapers out wet in the sun to dry - even works in winter, and the stains will magically vanish.
The gauze prefolds are really just burp cloths. They don't work.

yep, newborn breastmilk poo just goes bye-bye down the drain. it all rinses away. the extra rinse is actually to make sure there's no remaining detergent on the diapers.

no need to dry in between washes. i almost always machine-dry my diapers, though with my older son i did line-dry for a year because we had no dryer (even in winter). the dryer does damage the fibers more, but the difference isn't huge.

i love using gauze/birdseye flat-fold diapers. you simply fold them so that there are multiple layers to absorb the pee :)
