Fabric questions

Hi folks!

I recently purchased some pads with a WindPro Fleece backing and I'm curious: what do folks find to be more breathable: wool or fleece backing? Which offers better leak protection: wool or fleece? Other general preferences and Pros and Cons of each?

Also, just curious: do folks here tend to prefer bamboo or hemp fabrics...and why?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

On that note...do you know of any pad makers who make pads using the wonderful fabrics you described above? Do you sell pads online yourself?

I'm pretty well stocked up on bamboo velour pads, but I think you might be on to something: I think bamboo fleece or flannel might "stick" less than bamboo velour.

Now I'm in search of a pad with a fleece backing and a bamboo flannel/fleece/terry!

Thanks again -- great feedback!

I know Yurtcraft.etsy.com uses bamboo flannel in her pads and some other sellers on etsy as well. I occasionally do a custom order, either through LJ Message or thatpinkack.etsy.com, but the last custom order I did very recently took me quite a while to do. I'm a college student and work as well. ;) I do have bamboo flannel, just didn't snag a picture of it (it looks just like cotton flannel but a bit shiny, but the texture is amazing).

I highly recommend the bamboo fleece or bamboo flannel, they both work great! Bamboo terry is super soft and about as absorbent as bamboo fleece, but thinner.

You are so welcome! I am very happy to be of help!

My one wool backed pad shrunk, so I won't buy them now. Velour doesn't like my HE washing machine, if they are wet when I wash them (sometimes when they are dry too) they form little hole shapes from the washer in the velour and dry like that. Not comfy.

Out of curiosity: what do you prefer then? I'm having similar issues with my velour...not sure if it's as durable as other fabrics. I hear you with the wool backed pads, too: some of my wool backed pads, by one padmaker, have done that. Others, by a different company, are holding up just fine.

Has anyone here tried minky as a topper fabric? I've heard it wicks moisture away better than others, even though it is ultimately not as absorbent. Has anyone else heard or experienced this?

Most of my usual pads are cotton flannel, I have a few flat cotton topped ones, too. I use the velour ones when I haven't done laundry.

Aloha! I LOVE minky fabric...bamboo velour is my absolute fav because I can dye it all kinds of brilliant colors, but minky is super soft. I haven't found the it wicks much - maybe a little, but not like micro fleece topped pads would.
I also prefer wind pro backed pads versus wool. Wool is organic and can be very soft, but yes, hard to upkeep. I do not like PUL in pads at all. Had a couple and quit using them real quick. The only time I've ever leaked through a wind pro backed pad was during the first 3 days of postpartum, so I'd say it's very leak resistant. :)

Hi I havent actually used one myself yet but windbloc fleece is supposed to be extremely water resistant - more so than windpro. The maker Little Gumnut (UK WAHM) uses it to back her pads on request and she recommends them for incontinence as well as menstruation so they must work well. Ive been advised that it is as good as PUL - it certainly is amazingly dense to feel ( ... )

I don't really have a preference with fleece or wool.... I think I have 2 wool backed pads, and a couple of fleece - I was worried about leaking through, but I don't wear them on really heavy days, so haven't had any problems. I don't do anything special with my wool backed ones, just treat them the same as my other pads, and so far so good ( ... )
