I just acquired some fingering weight hemp yarn and am thinking about stranding it with some of the cotton yarn in my stash to knit inserts as a stash buster. Even if the holder is a set size, you may only need absorbency in the center, or the back or the front. If you're making your own inserts, you can customize them to the size you need. I'd recommend trying out a few different sizes to see what works best for you.
