Crochet inserts?

Hello everyone! I’m new to cloth pads. I crocheted some washcloths with Sugar n’Cream cotton yarn and was thinking about their absorbency. Do you guys thing that I could crochet a core for a pad? Would it not be as effective as Terry cloth? Could I use it along with other core materials or is it all together unnecessary?

Thanks for the help!-

I honestly don't know. Everyone has different absorbency needs. My flow isn't too heavy, so I wonder if that would be enough for me. I'm not sure how comfortable it would be as a core. I love crocheting with Sugar 'n Cream, but I think it would be a bit thick and stiff for a pad lining.

I've been considering this myself. If you try it, please post back and tell us how it goes! I think you'd probably need more than one layer, because there would be holes.

Same here! Cold weather always puts me on a crochet kick, and I'd been wondering if something like this would work.

I also might possibly consider felting some wool into a backing...what do you think?

I think it's worth a shot. The immediate difficulties I see arising are that you'd have to use single crochet to make the densest, and so most absorbent, fabric. That's going to be stiff, as folks have said, but it might wear in nicely, especially after you wash it. Oh that's another thing - is Sugar and Cream pre-shrunk? If not, you should crochet the liner bigger than you intended and pre-wash it. That would also help with any stiffness.

Definitely report back if you do this. I'm curious!

hmm yeah I made a really tight single crochet square to wash my face with and then washed it...there may be a tiny bit of shrinkage. I really think I'm going to make an aio pad with a strip of it to give it a try against other one's I'm making. I'll report back to the group! (my next period isn't until the 22nd though)

I think it's totally possible! Check out this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hymenoptera/2235137615/in/photostream/. I think a somewhat loose knit could be a great substitute for terry cloth, and if 100% cotton, is probably just as absorbent.

haha awesome! Yeah! I think I am going to give it a try for an envelope style pad I'm making and we'll see later this month how it holds up!! ^_^
