The swish of the bushy orange tail was silent in the still night; the small steps left no paw prints; only the reflection of the moonlight in his eyes gave any indication that he was there. Severus turned just in time to see a small glow disappear behind a tree.
Damn cat, he thought halfheartedly.
Crookshanks had taken to following him since his near-death experience in the Shrieking Shack. The cat’s presence had annoyed him at first, until he realized that it was Hermione’s doing and why she would send a half-Kneazle to be his guardian angel-she loved him.

Hermione never questioned Severus about where he slipped off to in the middle of the night, nor did she follow him, but she sent Crookshanks to watch after him and to make sure he returned home safely. Severus reflected on Hermione-persistent, exasperating, caring-and he loved her.
As he neared the front gate, Severus waited for Crookshanks to stealthily catch up. Severus picked Crookshanks up, tucking him under his arm as he scratched under the cat’s chin, setting him down again as he neared the front door-a regular display of camaraderie that neither would ever readily admit to.
